    DearColleagues,

    Youmayhavelearnedaboutmyserviceoncompensatedboards.Iwould
    liketosharewithyousomeofmythinking.

    MyacceptanceofthepositionontheDeVryEducationGroupboardof
    directorsdidnotcomplywithUCpolicy.Imadeanerrorinacceptingit.I
    takefullresponsibilityforthaterror,andIhaveresignedfromtheboard.
    IacceptedthepositionbecauseIbelievedIcouldhelpDeVrybetter
    evaluateitsproceduresfordeliveringasoundcurriculumandfor
    measuringstudentsperformanceandprogresspostgraduation.
    Nevertheless,Iapologizeformymistakeandthedistractionthishas
    causedforouruniversitycommunity.

    MyserviceontheboardofJohnWileyandSonsfrom20112014complied
    withUCpolicy.MygoalinacceptingthatpositionwastohelpWiley
    improvethequalityofitseducationalmaterials,whilemakingthemmore
    accessibleandaffordableforstudents.WhileIrecognizeandappreciate
    theconcernsraisedbymanyinourcommunityaboutmyserviceon
    theWileyboard,myworkontheboardhadnoimpactonUCtextbook
    purchases.

    TofurtherourworktogetheronbehalfofCaliforniastudents,hereismy
    commitmenttoourUCDaviscommunity:Iwillestablishascholarshipfund
    fordisadvantagedCaliforniaundergraduatestudentsatUCDavisfrommy
    Wileystockproceeds.

    Serviceonprivateandpublicboardsiswidelyrecognizedasa
    responsibilityofacademicleaders.AsawomanandaSTEMscholar,my
    servicehashelpedtocorrectthechroniclackofdiversityonanumber
    ofboards.MypledgetotheUCDaviscommunityistomorecarefullyvet
    suchinvitationsandtometiculouslyfollowUCapprovalproceduresinthe
    future.

    Tostudents,parents,faculty,alumni,donors,staff,andtothebroaderUC
    community,pleaseknowIremaindeeplycommittedtothisgreat
    university.Iamproudofwhatwehaveaccomplishedtogether.Since
    2010,UCDavishasenrolledmoreundergraduateCaliforniansthanany
    otherUCcampus.Weareaworldleaderandoneofjustfouruniversities
    anywherewithtwocollegesandschoolsrankednumberoneintheworld
    agricultureandveterinarymedicine.IamproudthattheNewYork
    Timesrankedussecond,behindonlyoneotherUCcampus,forserving

    economicallydiversestudents.Oureconomiccontributiontothestateof
    Californiaexceeds$8billionannually.

    ItisaprivilegetoworkonyourbehalftoensurethatUCDavisretainsand
    exceedsitsremarkablestature.Iameagertocontinuedevelopingthe
    pathbreakingcollaborationswehavelaunchedtogetherandwhichwill
    propelusforwardasaworldrankeduniversityfarintothe21stcentury.
