Teaching Presentation
Engagement:
Students will begin lesson by watching 5
short video clips from MTVs Cribs
Exploration:
Teacher will provide students with floor
plan handout 1-8. Using the interactive
white board application for iPad,
Doceri, teacher will explain handouts
to students including common blueprint
symbols and common elements found in
design as well as standard clearance
spaces.
Students will be given a copy of Floor
Plan Handout 9 and will draw 5 symbols
from each of the handouts explaining
design elements and templates.
Students will then be given copies of
final Floor Plan Handouts. Again using
Doceri, teacher will go over common
housing types and blueprints.
Students will be given full size
construction grid paper and will be given
time in class to individually create a
blueprint of their realistic dream home.
Students will include a list of
measurements for each room of their
house showing successful conversion
from scale inches to feet.
Explanation:
Students will research and find the towns
building codes. Students will print off a
copy highlighting building codes that
apply to their design to show
understanding of codes and that their
design meets the towns building codes.
Students will write an informative report
explaining their decisions on what
design elements they choice to
incorporate into their blueprints and how
that element increases, appeal, safety,
and/or value to their home.
Students will individually present their
blueprints to the class role-modeling as if
they are an inspiring architect presenting
a plan to a client.
Elaboration:
Once students have completed and
presented blueprints and completed
research into building codes and turned
in informative report, they will get a
laptop from the computer cart and use
the home design software Chief Architect
to design a digital version of their
blueprint and will include interior design
by adding furniture and other interior
design elements to create a complete
virtual 3D model of their blueprint.
Evaluation:
Teacher will collect and grade blueprints,
building code printouts, conversions and
informative report. Teacher will grade
students on the quality of their
presentation, students will receive 5
bonus points if the class would have
hired them. Teacher will view and grade
digital models.
Closure:
Teacher will find a reputable
architecture, or construction firm to send
an architect, or foreman to be a guest
speaker to class on the career field and
students will be provided opportunity to
present digital model to guest speaker
