LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Teachers Name: Brittany Courtot

March 16, 2016 March 18, 2016 (Day 2)

United States History II: College Prep

Topic: New Deal to WWII (1933 1941)

Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Objective:
Students will form connections between the events leading up to WWII.
Objective #2:
Student will be able to closely read a variety of primary texts to gather key
ideas and effectively be able to summarize those ideas.
Pre-Assessment: I will be using a KWL chart to mark the progression or growth of
students in reference to the events leading up World War II and the themes/key
concepts/ connections students can make therein.
Formative: Between both lesson periods, the key means of information gathering
will be discussions, group work and personal reflection all of which will be
facilitated by me.
Summative: Students will create a concept map together, which illustrates what
theyve learned and the connections they have made within the text. The students
will also be using a graphic organizer to record key points of discussion following
a video.
STANDARDS:
E1. a. Explain that history includes the study of the past based on the examination
of a variety of primary and secondary sources and how history can help one better
understand and make informed decisions about the present and future.

E1. b. Analyze and critique major historical eras, major enduring themes, turning
points, events, consequences, and people in the history of the United States and
world and the implications for the present and future.
E1. d. Analyze and critique varying interpretations of historic people, issues, or
events, and explain how evidence is used to support different interpretations.
Rationale: During the course of this lesson, I will be having the students tackle
key concepts and use their previous examinations of primary and secondary
sources to identify major themes, turnings points and events leading up to WWII.

Instructional Strategies to Differentiate Instruction

primary documents. I will
also be using various types

of

presenting the information

such as video, visual, audio, and my own definitions (specifically focused on
connecting the content to the students lives.)
Modifications/Accommodations/Extensions:
The students are in a College Prep class, so despite being diverse students, the only
real struggle is focusing their motivation. One student requires a modification of
more time to read and write with the materials. I will be doing a variety of

activities in mixed group types that will help the students in these particular classes
because they more effectively learn the content in small groups or by themselves. I
will be offering my help and accommodating whenever and wherever I am able.
Some students may need to have clarification on some concepts, so I will provide
multiple means of displaying those or explaining those. Other students might
require multiple check-ins to make sure that they remain on task, specifically some
students in Period 1.
I will be specifically using a tangible object to incite conversation by making it
somewhat of a game playing to the students love of sports and also it adds levity
to the lesson. Also, I will be offering students choice in how they present their
knowledge, although they have a guided graphic organizer they can pick to use that
or not.

Reflection: Considering that my students had never really be exposed to group

discussion before, the entire lesson on March 16 went very well I wish that more
students had taken the opportunity to speak during the course of the discussion.
However, if I were to do this lesson again I would probably have had given one
more day of instruction perhaps they would have been more comfortable sharing
more of their information. Although I think that going back over the information
really helped the students to better grasp the information they needed to further
understand the key concepts and themes. Again, I probably should have switched
the order of these lessons as one lesson would have bolstered another.
