Bingo RAP POEM Assignment

OBJECTIVE:

Create a five line RAP or Poem. The goal of the assignment is to create a five line RAP
or Poem that uses five literary devices. Below is a bingo chart, to aid in you creation of a RAP/
Poem. Try to create a straight line, whether it be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal & notice that
the middle box is FREE, meaning you can use whatever literary device you choose. Recall the
RAP and poems that we examined in class; Henleys Invictus demonstrates the use of a lyric
poem in which the author is formally expressing personal emotions or feelings through spoken
word/first person writing. Teasdales There Will Come Soft Rains demonstrates the use of
rhyming couplets through the rhyming of the last word in each sentence (i.e. ground/sound,
night/white, etc.). Finally, the RAP demonstrates a way of expressing oneself with a level of
comfort as, this is your opportunity to test out your Eminem rapping skills. You will receive two
marks for this assignment:
1. Written for your RAP/Poem.
2. Oral for your presentation of the RAP/Poem.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SWEAR.

ASIDE: The presentations will follow a similar format as your Book Talks did, in the sense
that you should not feel stressed about sharing your work. Everyone is preparing the same
assignment, so you should have fun with it and not over think what you are creating.

STEPS:
1. Choose to create a RAP or Poem
2. Identify what you want your RAP/ Poem to be about. What theme would you like? What
causes do you feel strongly about? What kind of music or poetry do you best relate to?
3. Choose the literary devices you would like to use.
4. Just write. As with everything you write, there may be a lot of rewriting, but you are just
creating five lines so you can write and rewrite until you are satisfied with what you have
created.
5. Title your work, edit & do not forget your name!
6. Present. Beginning Thursday March 23, 2016 two names will be drawn per class for a
presentation at the end of class.

Definitions:
1. Simile: Drawing a comparison between two things using like or as.
2. Metaphor: Draws a comparison between two unlikely things. Sometimes uses be.
3. Alliteration: Repetition of consonants at the beginning of words. There may be ONE word
between them. (i.e. Brown bag or, Brown leather bag).
5. Oxymoron: A figure of speech in which apparent contradictory terms appear in conjunction.
(i.e. The fast car was driving slow, OR, faith unfaithful kept in falsely true)
6. Hyperbole: gross exaggeration.
7. Personification: assigning human like attributes to inanimate objects. (i.e. The pencil danced).
8. Theme: The message the author is trying to convey through the piece or work.
9. Dialogue: A conversation between two or more people. (i.e. She said: blah, blah, blah).
