FRIENDS

Today I thought about those
of my friends who I can call successful people. I have so many,
but thats not surprising if you
spend 36 years in one of the most
fast-growing cities in the world,
one way or another some of your
friends will end up doing some
good things, even some exceptional things. Theyll make a great
film or at least a few outstanding
ones. Theyll open some of the
best restaurants in Moscow, create a multimillion dollar business
from scratch and then sell it, or
theyll create a business from
scratch and keep it.
My friends are all very dierent.
Theyre all dierent ages, they
work in dierent fields. Some
of them vote for Putin, some of
them vote for Navalny, and some
of them havent been to vote in
sixteen years. I tried to understand whether all of these people
have anything in common other
than the fact that they all know
me (I doubt that could have had
much influence on their success).
And here is what I found:
All of them have an idea: a key
idea that permeates their entire
existence. Its like the kebab
skewer that runs through all the
projects, events, and accomplishments of their lives. In my friends
I have encountered very broad
ideas (I will foster a revolution in
the agricultural sector) as well
as very modest ones (I will make
some money, buy an apartment
for each one of my relatives, and
finally they will leave me alone so
that I can lay on the couch and
watch curling). But both kinds of
idea help them accomplish a goal,
help keep them at a distance
from others.
None of them shrink from
a dull task: things like learning
how to use Excel. Because only
an ability to withstand (and to do
well) mechanical, repetitive, dull
work will bring you to success.
Each one of them finds harmony within themselves. Of
course among my friends there
are, how shall we say, the rest-

less souls, who are constantly

doubting themselves and their
decisions. And these people are
often successful too, particularly
in the arts. But my friends who
are truly successful are able to
find harmony and devote themselves entirely to what they are
doing without major pauses
for reflection, without allowing
the worm of insecurity to roam
around them, without waiting for
encouragement from others. Here
you could probably describe it as
love for oneself, but I prefer to
call it harmony.
Each one of them is surrounded by people who support them:
first and foremost this is their
family. For every one of them,
their wives (and often, their children too) are their most important allies in everything.
All of them are generous people: strangely enough (or maybe
its not strange at all), all my
successful friends both those
who own their own business
and those who manage one for
others are generous people.
Theyre not flashy with money,
but at the same time theyre not
wasting away over a pile of gold.
That means that, when its time
to pay at a restaurant, each one
of them will oer to foot the bill
themselves.
Generosity doesnt just mean
money: it concerns ideas, experience, and knowledge. Each one of
these people is ready to share not
only the contents of their wallet
but the contents of their minds.
They write columns, they teach,
theyre eager to tell the story
of how they attained success.
Theyre not afraid of competition,
theyre not afraid that somebody
will steal their idea because
theyre confident that nonetheless
they will achieve what they want
to. And after all, reaching a goal
with a group of likeminded people is for them more interesting
than doing it on their own.
They are constantly learning.
They are mastering the relevant
specializations, they are learning foreign languages, learning
programming languages, going
to industry events. Theyll even
get Snapchat so that they can talk
more easily to their children and

yes, thats also something that

they have to learn.
Almost all of them do some
form of physical exercise. I say
almost because Im afraid of

For Vladislav Martynov, director of Yota Devices and the
main hype man for Russias only
smartphone, it was never going to
be easy. But six years in, we find
him in China, desperately trying
to drum up support from consumers and investors after the
Western world closed its doors
post-Ukraine. Now, he admits,
he is closer to despair.
Martynov grew up outside
Moscow, where his father
worked in space exploration
and cosmonauts often came
for dinner. He served two years
in the navy and fell in love with
the sea. Back home, he went to
university, got a job at Russias
first McDonalds, and sold contraband goods at market. When
Russia opened up in the 1990s,
he worked in IT and eventually
moved to Microsofts California
oce. In 2010 he got a call from
back home, asking if he would
like to help create Russias first
smartphone.
YotaPhones main feature is
its two screens one backlit, the
other a low-energy screen that
doesnt sap your battery. The
idea was hailed by tech junkies,
but consumers didnt buy it
only sold 30,000 in Russia in its
first year. Then sanctions kicked
in: Western investors turned
away, but for all the patriotic
hoopla, Russians werent lining
up to help. In four years, the company hasnt been able to get one
local investor interested. Without
funds, things are at a standstill:
the third model of the phone is
six months behind deadline.
Martynov always wanted to
battle with stereotypes and show
the world that Russians can do
business and foster innovation
but instead he is battling with
stereotypes Russians have of
themselves.
