Fill in the Gap

1. We
genes from our Mum and
Dad.
2. Genes which are made up of DNA are packaged in
things called
.
3. Chromosomes are found in every
in our body.
4. Our bodies are made up of
of
cells. These are the
of life.
5. In every cell of our body we have 23
of chromosomes.
6. The two strands of DNA in each cell of your body
twist around each other and look like a twisting,
twirling ladder. This shape is called a

Boy or Girl?
Below are the nuclei of two cells. One is from a boy and
the other is from a girl. Can you sort out which is which?
q Heres a hint how
Look for the two number 1 chromosomes in a cell and
colour them in the same
Then go on to 2, 3 and so on, up to 22
Try to make each pair the same within itself but to
different to all the other pairs (eg. 1=red and yellow
stripes, 2=blue and white stripes etc)
After you have coloured 22 pairs, you will have 2
chromosomes left
If they are 2 X chromosomes, the cell belongs to a girl
If they are an X and a Y chromosome, the cell belongs
to a boy

Human Genes

Living things are plants,

and humans.

Living things are made up of

All living things have

all

in their cells. So

, animals and humans have genes in

their cells.
Genes contain the

for making a living

thing grow and

Genes are made up of

and

so all plants, animals

have DNA.

So if all living things have genes made up of DNA,

why dont we look like a

Because
1. the

of genes is different in the cells

of a human and a tomato and

2. the

in the genes of a human

is also different to that of a tomato

Tomatoes have
about 35 000 genes

Fruitflies have around

13 600 genes

Humans have about

20 000 genes

Worms have 19 099

genes thats very
close to the number of
genes humans have!
Remember: Humans
dont look like worms
because the type of
information in worm
genes is different to
that in human genes.

Honey Bees have 10 157

genes

All living things have genes.
