2015 - 2018 DEVELOPMENT PLAN

INTRODUCTION
Following our broadly based, highly participatory process that
produced our development vision for the centre founded on our
purpose, mission, and commitment statements, the Tesla
Research and Innovation Centre has identified three themes that
will guide our progress through 2018.

OUR MANDATE
The Tesla Research and Innovation Centre was founded in 2014 to
create ways that provide opportunities for students throughout
the world to engage in high quality exchange of cooperation in
science and engineering. The Tesla Research and Innovation Centre is responsive to the individual needs of our partner institutions
or organizations and committed to the communities we serve.

THE MISSION
Tesla Research and Innovation Centre advisors, executives and
staff use innovative, alternative and flexible approaches to
research and innovation that empower people and communities
by providing resourceful environment that connect individuals
unique ability to excel their interests in science and engineering.

OUR COMMITMENTS
As a community of learners at the TESLA Research and
Innovation Centre, we are committed to:
Promoting science and engineering and empowering early
learning development in science and engineering.
Ensuring a healthy democracy that recognizes and respects
diversity in all its forms.
Critical reflective inquiry that encourages active engagement in
the local and global community.
Supporting development goals in a collaborative mentoring
environment.
Fostering respectful, creative and vibrant research and
innovation environments.
Supporting the creative and professional goals of the science and
engineering community.
Serving our partners and the public with a high level of courtesy
and effectiveness.
Advocating at the regional, provincial and national levels for the
needs of the science and engineering community and of higher
education in science and engineering.
Expanding access to affordable, high-quality educational
opportunities through partnerships with employers, unions,
government agencies, community organizations and other educational institutions.

OUR CORE VALUES

The core values of the Tesla Research and Innovation Centre reflect the commitments of a dynamic, participatory and experimenting institution accessible and dedicated to the needs of a
richly diverse research and innovation community in science and
engineering.
These values are woven into the decisions we make about what
we choose to do, how we carry out our work in all parts
of the institution, and how we judge the outcome of our individual
and collective efforts.

THE VISION FOR 2018

In 2018, the TESLA Research and Innovation Centre is widely
recognized as a pioneering and innovative research and innovation
centre in power generation, power distribution and power storage.
It provides a high-quality interdisciplinary and professional
environment to motivated and engaged lifelong learners everywhere
in Canada and beyond.
The TESLA Research and Innovation Centre:
supports researchers and innovators as active partners in their
quest for building the future of power generation, power distribution and power storage globally;
transcends the boundaries of time, place and ways of RD and I;
integrates and engages researchers and innovators with their
past, present and future creative faculties;
creates and supports cooperative initiatives among all segments
of the science and engineering community to foster respect,
civility and a welcoming development environment in RD and I;
supports the social and economic development and
sustainability of both its partners and their communities.

Overview of the Plan
This first development plan for the Tesla Research and Innovation Centre is the result of a broad consultative process across the Niagara Region, Canada and internationally undertaken by the Advisory Board
between 2010-2014. Its members believe this will be a living and
evolving document, a principle that ought to guide all future development planning.
The overarching themes around which the 2015 - 2018 Development
Plan is organized are:
Promotion and development re. educational opportunities
Promotion and development re. research and innovation
Empowering, servicing and awareness re. science and engineering
These themes are explicated in terms of one or more measurable key
goals. Within each key goal, a set of objectives for achieving the goal is
listed.

GOALS
Philosophy and Rationale
Growing out of our unique mission, the goals outlined below
serve as a vital link between Nikola Teslas historical
mission, the current context of rapid energy development, and
the future of our energy needs in a global society where
knowledge, learning, research and innovation remain urgently
important.
These statements encapsulate the values that we bring to our
work with partners and they articulate our hopes for our
future. We also believe it is our responsibility as disruptors to
enter into collaborative relationships with all like minded
individuals, which requires transparency about our goals and
values. Finally, by clearly stating these goals, we will be able to
both reflect upon our partners and our own success through a
creative, collaborative and interactive assessment process that
extends across multiple levels.

Promote the development of educational opportunities in

businesses, educational institutions and society at large
by promoting science and engineering
Build more awareness, and bring to the forefront of our
