Narrative
This curriculum map comes from Mesa Public Schools District. The following lessons
have been created for a fourth grade classroom in which I had experience working with in my
previous student teaching semester. This class room has 1 special education student, two speech
children and a classroom student total of 27.
Mini Lesson One
Sleep
Standard
RI.5 Describe the overall structure (e.g., Chronology, comparison, cause/effect,&
problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.
Objective
Students are able to use a concept map for cause and effect of sleeping a good amount and the
cause and effect of not sleeping enough through the reading of a scholarly article.
Lesson Plan
During reading time the teacher will introduce the article on sleep and how important sleep is
and when we do not get enough sleep what happens to our bodies. The students will read aloud
as a class and highlight important information from the text. Individually, the students will
create a cause and effect text structure map based off of the information they found in the article,
and will then get with a partner and discuss what they learned.
Some questions the students will talk about in their partner discussion:
Why is sleep important?
What happens to our bodies when we do not sleep enough?
How many hours a night do you typically sleep?
What can you do at home to ensure you are getting enough sleep each night?
After the class discussion the teacher will collect the cause and effect maps from each student to
ensure they have mastered the standard and understood the topic.

Mini Lesson Two
Physical education and movement
Standard
a. Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in
which related ideas are grouped to support the writers purpose.
Objective
The students will be able to create a opening statement, attention grabber and sate their three
reasons for their opinion after reading and highlighting the article they are given on physical
education and its importance.
Lesson Plan
The students will be able to read an article about physical education in schools and form their
own opinion if PE should be taking place during school time. The article will discuss the
importance of movement and exercise throughout the day. The students will then create an
opening statement, attention grabber and state three reasons that they will later be able to find
evidence with from the text. The students will then have a chance to share their opinions with a
partner and back up why they think what they do.
Mini Lesson Three
Environmental Health
Standard
. Describe how natural events and human activities have positive and negative impacts on
environments (e.g., fire, floods, pollution, dams).
Human activities
Introduction of non-native plants and animals
Building of dams, roads
waste disposal and Natural events
Fire, flood, drought, pollution positive impact, negative impact Trade Book: Stone Wall
Secrets, The Great Trash Bash, The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks
2 Evaluate the consequences of environmental occurrences that happen either rapidly (e.g fire,
flood, tornado) or over a long period of time (e.g., drought, melting ice caps, the greenhouse
effect, erosion
Objective
Students will be able to discuss as a class using premade questions from
teacher how the effects of human activities affect our environment such as
pollution, water, drought etc.
Lesson Plan
The students will watch a video from The Magic School Bus series that explains water and the
importance of water and the effects of using too much water in our world. This video will lead

into a discussion about our impact on the environment and how we can make simple changes to
do our part to make sure we are conserving water and trying our best to not pollute. The
discussion will lead to an AVID one pager activity where the students will have the chance to
create a page collage using drawings, words and phrases to explain pollution and water
conservation and what they can do as individuals to make sure they are doing their part.
Some questions that will be led in the discussion are:
What is water conservation?
What can we do as individuals to conserve water?
What happens when we pollute or use too much water?
