When T thine of you and President Nixon, and your many warm gestures to us, I particutarty remember when on Lyndon's birthday 4m 1969, you asked us to Lunch at your beautiful home in San Clemente close to the sea. Then we gLew up to a portion of the Redwood Forest which came into the National Park Service in the Fal of ‘66, and then named the Lady 8iad Johnson Gaove. It mas a charming dedication ceremony, and an act of such kindness and generosity! I am very fortunate to have shared so many treasured times and experiences with you. Our first meeting was at a gathering of the Chowder and Marching Society when our husbands were both young members of the House of Representatives. Starting by campaigning together during the Eisenhower years, Republican politics brought us together many times and in many places. The highlight of our many years of friendship, however, has been sharing the experiences of our children growing up. As I look at Tricia and Julie and Mike, Jack, Steve and Susan today, we can both be very proud of how they turned out. Our respective times as First Lady have given us memories we will never forget. But for both of us, I think those six children and the grandchildren that have been added to our families are our greatest accomplishments. Congratulations on your special day. My good wishes come to you full of love and with gratitude for the friendship you have given me over so many Bats i ; # ROSALYNN CARTER 16 March 1993 Dear Pat, Jimmy and I are pleased to join your many friends in wishing you a Happy Birthday! Thinking back over the years, I am reminded of the first time I met you and of your graciousness and helpfulness to me. My husband was elected governor while President Nixon was in office, and only days after Jimmy's imauguration, our senior Senator, Richard Russell, died. You and the President were kind enough to come to the funeral in Georgia, and we met together briefly at the state capitol before the service. Being a new governor's wife, I was particularly interested in your activities ‘as First Lady of our country. You told me about your program of volunteerism, and a few weeks later, sent a delegation of cabinet wives to Georgia to meet with me and to encourage volunteerism in our state. As First Ladies you and I both have seen our husbands struggle with the problems that face our nation, particularly the intractable problems of poverty, homelessness, the loneliness of our elderly citizens, the issues ‘concerning the physically and mentally handicapped, and more. We have also been made aware that government can never solve all these problems. It is your philosophy of "people helping people" that is still so important and so necessary in helping to meet these challenges. You were an inspiration to me that first day, and I have admired you ever since. Thank you for your service to the people of our country. And have a wonderful birthday celebration! Sincerely, Recekyan Corton? Mrs. Pat Nixon Nixon Library Nancy REAGAN March 15, 1993 Dear Pat: 1 am so happy to join your legion of friends in wishing you the happiest of birthdays. Although we have only occupied the White House for a very short time, your grace and caring are evident. The Red, Green and Blue Rooms still reflect your efforts and the evening illumination of the mansion that you initiated is a delight to everyone who passes. On this day of celebration, I thought you would Like to know that we will continue the Spring garden and Christmas candlelight tours. Among your many "firsts," I have learned that you became our first Madame Ambassador by traveling independently abroad to Peru, Africa and South America. I hope to serve the President and the nation as well. The non-denominational Sunday services you instituted in the East Wing, were also unprecedented in White House history. I hope those prayers will reverberate through our stay and that this birthday greeting finds you in good health and spirit. With best personal regards, I remain Sincerely yours, [hla Or tlie CLentrs Mrs. Pat Nixon c/o John H.
