Introduction
The final exemplar I have chosen to include in my portfolio is my
9th Grade General Guidance Results Report, which I developed in the
form of a Flashlight presentation. The goal of creating this
presentation was to highlight the results of my 9th Grade General
Guidance core curriculum lesson that I implemented at my fieldwork
site, Mission Hills High School (MHHS). I included this exemplar
because I learned so much about how to measure and share program
results in a meaningful way so that I can be intentional with my
counseling interventions and have the skills necessary to evaluate the
effectiveness of my school counseling program in meeting students
academic, career, and personal/social needs.
Standard 17: Foundations of the School Counseling Profession
In order to have a comprehensive school counseling program,
school counselors must constantly evaluate how their programs and
services are supporting student development, learning, and
achievement. The Flashlight presentation I created was a tool for me to
share my 9th Grade General Guidance core curriculum lesson that I
implemented from beginning to end, which included: the ASCA
National Standards for Students that were addressed, process,
perception, results data, and implications for next steps. By creating
this presentation I was able to share how my core curriculum lesson
had a positive impact on students attitudes, knowledge, and skills
regarding graduation requirements, A-G requirements, and course
credits. I was also able to connect how a positive shift in students
attitudes, knowledge, and skills pertaining to these measures is

correlated with an increase in A-G enrollment patterns and ultimately

an increase in student grades and the amount of students graduating
UC and CSU eligible. This Flashlight presentation allowed me to
demonstrate my ability to develop, implement, and evaluate
components within a comprehensive school counseling program so
that I am able to determine ways to improve upon services that will
benefit student learning and achievement.
Standard 28: Organizational and System Development
Measuring the impact that counseling services have on students
is an important component of implementing a comprehensive school
counseling program because it can not only help school counselors
evaluate the impact of their programs, but it also allows for school
counselors to advocate for improved programs, policies, practices, and
services. Through this project, I found how ideal Flashlight
presentations are for sharing results with stakeholders because it
allowed for me to offer a more concrete explanation of my results
through the use of graphs and charts. By creating this Flashlight
presentation, I have learned how to utilize a valuable tool that will help
me share the results of my counseling program with stakeholders
leading to an increase in the likelihood of gaining more support for my
program, and ultimately leading to an increase in my ability to support
more students academic, career, and personal/social needs.
Conclusion
Creating this Flashlight presentation increased my confidence
immensely in my ability to utilize data to create intentional guidance
programs that align with the ASCA National Model. One of the most
important takeaways that I gathered from this assignment was that
even if some results of a program are less significant than anticipated,
all results are ultimately good because they offer counselors feedback
for steps to take to make the program better the next time it is

implemented. Lastly, I learned how even though some schools might

be more resistant to the implementation of new programs than others,
using data as a means to show stakeholders the value of such
programs on student learning and achievement can spark
conversations that might have never surfaced otherwise.
