PROCEDURE

5.1

WELDS REPAIR
5.1.1

Refer to the NDT reports for the location, size, depth and orientation of the defect. Location
of defective areas shall be clearly marked on the joint.

5.1.2

Re-welding of the defective areas. Preheat temperature shall be 50C above preheat used in
performing the original or 150C whichever is higher weld as specified by the approved
repair WPS. Preheat is not applicable for Stainless steel and Duplex steel. Preheat shall be
maintained throughout the excavation and re-welding operation.

5.1.3

Excavation shall extend at least 25 mm (50 mm for cracks) beyond the extremities of the
defect and in the case of partial thickness repair; the depth of excavation shall extend at
least 3 mm beyond the reported depth.

5.1.4

When a defect is identified as a crack, the repair shall not be done until the casue of the
crack has been established and investigated. A notification shall be provided and repair may
only commence once appropriate repair method is approved by COMPANY. The gouging
shall be carried out in two stages. The first shall commence one inch before the beginning of
the defect location progressing to the midpoint of the weld. The second stage shall
commence one inch from the other end and progressing to the same midpoint. This will
ensure that the crack is contained and propagation is prevented.

5.1.5

Excavation of the repair area may be done by grinding or air carbon arc gouging to remove
the defect. When air carbon arc gouging is used it shall be followed by grinding to remove
the residual carbon prior to welding. The excavated cavity shall have a groove preparation
approximating the requirement of the applicable WPS. A mimic of the excavated area shall
be performed for this purpose and to ensure that the defect is removed.

5.1.6

Carry out visual inspection of the gouged area and perform depth checks using profile
gauge, pit gauge, welding gauge or other appropriate means to verify that the proper
gouging depth is reached.

5.1.7

Perform MPI or DPI on the excavated area to ascertain complete removal of defect prior to
re-welding

5.1.8

When full thickness repair is to be made it shall be performed in the same manner as
described above except that the gouging depth shall be at through thickness. For a double
sided joint repair, the one side shall be excavated and re-welded first prior to repairing the
other side.

All activities during the repair operation shall be monitored by a dedicated QA/QC Inspector
and overseen by the Welding Foreman/Leader. Company to be notified prior to the start of
the any major repair activities.

5.1.12

All repairs and subsequent NDT test after repair shall be the same manner as that of the
original weld. Perform visual inspection, NDT in accordance with the original requirements.
NDT shall be carried out after repaired area has cooled down to ambient temperature after
completion of weld repair. For welds of project material type I, II, VI, & VII NDT shall be
carried out after 48 hours of completion of weld repair.

5.1.13

Minor weld defects such as: Overlap, Excessive convexity, undercut, weld spatter, etc shall
be removed by grinding, chipping or brushing.

5.1.14
5.1.15

Contractor shall inform Company at least 4 hours in advance of major repair activities.
All repair for piping shall be recorded.
