Welcome class. I am your teacher Mr. Kerssens Mr. K is alright
with me
Write your name on the board for students
I am a student teacher and I will be teaching you throughout
this week and then Mr. B will continue on with you for the
remainder of the quarter
I will begin with some classroom expectations
1. Everyone will be respectful to everyone else in the
class this includes me and your classmates. How do
we do this? Ask students to give examples of how to
show respect if these are not said add them in
a. Listening when someone is speaking
b. Not shouting out answers I will call on students
to help answer questions and if you would like to
answer one raise your hand
2. We will all follow the school rules on hats, dress code,
and phones
3. Everyone will put their best effort into the work in the
class, including myself this will ensure the success of
all students

Hand out log books, notes, and text books

We are studying all of the natural sciences in this class but the
first one that we will focus on in chemistry
Learning Activity

Chemistry is all about how everything in our world interacts

with its environment, on an atomic level
We see chemical reactions in so many parts of our lives what
are some reactions that we see and use every day?
Breathing, digesting, brushing your teeth, using soaps and
detergents, food preservation, and even in electronics
This makes chemistry a very important part of life because it is
involved with so many aspects of it
In order to understand it, scientists experiment with
substances in order to see how they interact or react and
then they try to explain the process that allows it to work
We are going to practice working as scientists and try to
understand some of the processes that are going on during
certain reactions
In the beginning this may be difficult because we do not have
many ways to talk about these but as the unit progresses, you
will gain the vocabulary necessary to discuss and characterize
these reactions

12:1612:20

Reflection Notes

Learning Activity

We are going to get into observing some of these reactions but

first it is important to stay safe and in order to do this, we
must look at what is required to ensure the safety of everyone
I would like to hear what you as students think is necessary in
order to make sure that everyone is safe in the classroom
Set up a page and have students respond and write them

12:2012:30

down as they say them

We are now going to look at a video of a pretty cool
experiment while the experiment is cool, the procedure that
the experimenter takes is not very safe
Take out a piece of paper and write down all of the things that
you see him do, that should be done differently
Play the video
After the video is complete ask students to share some of the
things that they saw that were unsafe
Compare their lists to my own list this person was not
seriously hurt but he could have been if he were not so lucky
Reflection Notes

Demo

Let us begin by looking at a reaction

Have the students come up with what they think should be
done in preparation for the experiment
This should include putting on goggles and a lab coat, reading
labels on reactants to understand the dangers of each one,
and ensuring that the reaction area is clear of any other
reactants that might interact with this, also know where the
fire extinguisher is

12:3012:50

Elephant toothpaste reaction

H2O2 + dry yeast solution + soap + KI for colour change
Show KI + H2O2 by itself to show the colour change
Have students wear safety goggles during the demo also
Reflection Notes

Student Practice

When everyone has returned to their desks put up the WHMIS

symbols on the board without labels
Have students try to identify them from memory or by looking
at the symbol they are designed to make it quite clear
After students have had some time to work through these, go
through them and show why the image is the way that it is
For compressed gas put up an image of a compressed gas
cylinder for those who have never seen it
Have students try to identify them on their own and identify
what precautions should be taken on page 1 of the log book

12:501:00

Reflection Notes

Demo

Lets take a look at some chemical reactions

How do we know when a chemical reaction is taking place?
new substances are formed or there is an energy change
heats up or cools
Lets take a look at the following reaction
Sugar + H2SO4 (conc)
Ask students what extra safety precaution should be taken
when dealing with this material? gloves H2SO4 is extremely
corrosive

1:00-1:26

How do we know that a chemical reaction took place?

Colour change shows that the substance changed it is now
pure carbon
Energy transfer it heated up so it is exothermic
The opposite can also take place if we mix the following
reactants
Ammonium thiocyanate + barium hydroxide
How do we know a chemical reaction took place?
Two solids changed to a liquid indicates that it is a new
substance because it did not melt
Energy transfer cools off a lot - endothermic
Allow students to touch the beaker once it is done reacting to
feel the cold
Before the break show the KMnO4 + glycerin experiment
Add HCl if it does not ignite
Break
Science
Appreciation

Watch ASAP science video tell students that so much of

science is happening in the world around us so it is important
to take time to understand how it impacts our lives
Which topic are you most interested in?
Have students put their heads down and vote anonymously on
the following three options
a. Is ADHD an advantage?
b. What is humans disappeared?
c. Natural foods or synthetic foods?

1:34-1:40

How do we characterize matter in our world?

We have physical and chemical properties phys tell us what a
substance looks like
Chem tells us how it interacts with other things in its
environment
Lets take a look at some substances in order to understand
the differences
Have the powder and solution of each of the following
substances laid out for the students to examine
KMnO4, Cu(O2CCH3)2, NiCl2, CoCl2, Cu(NO3)2, MnO2, K2Cr2O7
Have students examine each of the crystals and solutions
If these came up in a reaction it would be pretty obvious
mixing together liquids and you get a colorful new thing
In order to see this lets take a look at one of these
Pb(NO3)2 + KI rxn
Explain that there are other properties such as malleability,
ductility, boiling and melting point, and conductivity

Demo

We will look at one more characteristic but this one can be

very dangerous
You must follow my instructions in order to ensure your own
safety and if you are joking around I will cancel the demo
immediately
The characteristic is flash point this is when a substance

2:00-2:10

ignites
Some substances reach their flashpoint gradually with heat,
such as wood but others rapidly reach their flashpoint
The Mg that we were dealing with is one of the most rapid
substances to reach its flashpoint
Because of this it gets very bright, very quickly
I will show you this but you all must be looking away from it,
do not look directly at it
Use your peripherals to see the light and do not allow yourself
to have your eyes wander to it
Have students gather around to observe the flashpoint of Mg
Give another reminder to not look directly at it
Reflection Notes

Experiment

Physical properties are important for characterizing substances

but in chemistry we often focus on the chemical properties
because these tell us what happens during reactions
Let us look at some of these properties in real life
Have students work in groups of 4
Have lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda solution, and a Mg
piece at each station
Have a handout that guides students to identify the acidity/
basicity of each, the reaction with acids of each, and the
reaction with air of each
For reaction with acids tell students not to use too much of
each substance and to be near a sink if necessary
Give students some time to characterize these and then take
in their sheets at the end
When asking questions, ask if any are reacting with the air
Point out the white substance on the Mg and identify it as MgO

2:10-2:30

Reflection Notes

Learning Activity

Lets take a look at what substances look like when they mix
Sometimes substances are isolated and sometimes they are
interacting without a reaction or sometimes they react to form
a new type of mixture
The types of substances that we see in our world are
separated into two categories, pure substances and mixtures
Show the flow chart and explain which each type is, give an
example of each
Bring in examples of each
The hardest one to identify is a colloid, which is something
that is like a suspension but it is harder to isolate milk is a
colloid
To show this I will show you a way to isolate the milk fats in the
milk, just by adding an acid (recall vinegar is acid) Show the
milk and vinegar

2:30-2:40

:Reflection Notes

Learning Activity

Student Practice

These mixtures are important because they can show some

properties such as dissolving, reacting and showing phase
change, or other important identifications in a chemical
reaction
These are not reactions but they are just substances sitting
with each other minding their own business
This is important in characterizing chemical reactions which is
something we will be looking at tomorrow, when things react
they have interesting features such as new substances and
energy is transferred

2:40-2:45

Work on log books #2 and 4 and 3 when you are finished the
others
4 will be done on a loose leaf paper, 2 and 3 are in the logbook
