BURNABY, British Columbia(March 5, 2016) Whole Foods Market announced that it would
award a $30,000 low-interest loan to Harkers Organics as part of the companys Local Producer
Loan Program. Through this program, Whole Foods Market is committed to providing $25 million
in low-interest loans to local growers, producers and food artisans.
A farm in its sixth generation, Harkers Organics has harnessed sustainable food growth since
British Columbia became a province. With the 30-acre organic estate, the Harker family produces
crops and tree fruits where they sell products at the property market, in addition to processing,
packing and brokering to 15 organic growers as well as supplying 15 British Columbia restaurants.
The growers recently added a winery to the property, where they create fruit wines with the fruit of
preexisting trees.
With the Whole Foods Market financing, Harkers Organics will add a new processing line to the
business packinghouse.
The Harker family has been dedicated to local farming for generations and theyve been passionate
about cultivating sustainable crops, said Denise Breyley, Whole Foods Markets Local Forager in the
Pacific Northwest. Its rewarding to partner with Harkers Organics as the unique fruit wine and
sustainable crop growers thrive.
There will be a cheque presentation ceremony for Harkers Organics March 5 at 11:30 a.m., at the
North Burnaby Whole Foods Market during Meet the Makers, an event series for shoppers to get to
know local farmers, ranchers, makers, producers and artisans.
