UMTS 900MHz Program

Milestone Summary: TI Team

Product: UMTS 900MHz (9311 BTS)

Milestone date: 08Wk13.4 (updated Wk15)

Recommendation:

Milestone: DR5
Date of review: March 27th, 2008

GO with Limitations(*)

Approvers: Director: C.S. Dubois

Release Leader: Mirna Plainfoss

Point still to be closed (Delivery planned Wk14)

WNE U900MHZ Deliverables (HLTP/ DTP / Handbook) - DONE

DR5 Limitations(*):

Perf & Stab Monitoring on 900MHz cluster with real end-users traffic not done (no FUT available during Trials)

=> Action Plan: Need to perform a soak period (Stab & Perf monitoring) when U900MHz will be deployed and commercially open with enough endusers traffic (around 1000 Calls per BTS per Days for both CS & PS services). New counters interBand Mobility to be tested also (Feat.28356)
=> Risk: SW issues or instabilities when load will increase could happen.

HSUPA Service in the 900MHz Band has no been validated due to no UE available in the trials timeframes

=> Action Plan: R&D to plan formal tests campaign to give Green Light for HSUPA services with U900MHz (some basic tests already done low risk)

Proven of U900 enhancements versus U2100 not achieve on the field (mainly for Tput and Coverage enhancements)

=> Action Plan: WNE to get results ASAP from Bytel ongoing trial in order to definitely conclude on those topics
=> Risk: Gap between theoretical study versus live measurement could lead to business issue (on recommended lower number of sites for example)

SW Dependencies:

Recommended Load Line-up is OAM5.2.3 / RNC-BTS 5.1.3 to take into account latest fix of issues found during trials.
Minimum Load Line-up (without major issue) is OAM5.1.3 / RNC-BTS 5.0.3 (but RNC build required see slides)

HW Dependencies:

DDSM Module (for antenna sharing) is out of this DR5 scope

AISG not supported on U900MHz DDM (Band E & P)
BTS 9332 rCompact (OD) is not supported with 900MHz Frequency Band

UMTS 900MHz DR5 Milestone

Introduction
> UMTS 900MHz is designed to enhanced coverage for rural area (site count
reduction) and to improve indoor penetration in urban environment
> Real FOA customer has not been found but two Trials had taken place
between September07 and March08 with:
Orange customer in France (Testbed + Field trial in rural environment)
Indosat (Indonesia) Phase 1 & 2 (Testbed + Field trial in rural environment)
A 3rd Trial with Bytel is ongoing in Urban/Suburban environment
> Out of this DR5 scope:
RRH 900MHz
DDSM Module (for antenna sharing) but R&D validation now completed
without issue and Module + Kit are orderable (see MOPG).

including Antenna sharing coupling solution 2G/3G 900MHz (Orange solution)
o focus on coexistence of UMTS and GSM on same band (different carrier spacing)
o focus on coverage UMTS 900 versus UMTS 2100
o focus on functional tests (R99 & HSDPA)

> Key achievements:

First Live UMTS 900Mhz call on Orange network in 2007
Successfully demonstrated readiness of 900Mhz Alcatel-Lucent technology
Gain of 900Mhz versus 2100Mhz not really proven (area & tools issues)

> HW deployed:
6 * U900Mhz NodeBs (including 1 co-located 2100-900 site) with DDM-P
Type of coverage: Rural (in hilly environment) + One site for indoor penetration

> SW Load line-up:

BYTEL Trial STATUS

UMTS 900MHz DR5 Milestone

Bytel ongoing Trial Progress Status
> Start Date = 08Wk03
> End Date = 08Wk44
> Scope / Configuration:

Mainly done by Bytel with support and optimization services provided by ALU
Phase1:
6 sites 2100 MHz + 1 site 900 MHz
End of engineering optimization: W10, W12 (including report completion)
Successfully done

Bouygues Telecom's tests: W11 -> W14

Phase 2 (from Wk18)

W12 -> W18

LINE UP:

OAM 5.1.2 EP4

UA 5.0.2 EP2
BTS UNB05D110312

1 site U2100 + 6 sites 2100 swapped in U900

Phase 2 parameter proposal (ALU): W18 & W19
On-site activities: Pre-optim and optim (tilts + neighboring + parameters, ALU): W20 -> W23

Bouygues Telecom's tests: W24 -> W41

Phase 3:

900->2100 ALU (6 nodes B U900 from Phase 2) + removal of U900 site (ALU): W42 & W43
Phase 3 pre-optim + optim ALU (tilts + neighboring + parameters): W43&W44

> Configuration: DDM-E is used

> Type of coverage: Urban/Suburban
> Goal: RF Study to prove U900 enhancements versus U2100 as well as co-existence with
existing G900 layer
> In order to close open points regarding improvements with U900 versus U2100
(Mainly coverage gain) WNE will take part of Bytel trials Phase 2 measurements to
conclude of those topics.

UMTS 900MHz Device Status

Key points
> Lead Platform Suppliers today support 900MHz frequency band for UMTS technology
Nokia, Motorola, Qualcomm, EMP all have Base Band & Radio solutions ready
> First Devices delivered on the market in 2007
Nokia commercially launched the first 900MHz compliant terminal in July 2007
Option Wireless were the first device vendor to ship prototype HSDPA data cards to customers (Q3/07),
Prototype UPA data cards expected in March 2008
> Tri-band UMTS devices are becoming the minimum baseline for new 3G Devices
However most supported frequency bands shall remain Band 1, 2 and 5 (850/1900/2100 as per ITU)
> From 2008, 900MHz frequency will be generally available
Units to be available initially on dual band and tri-band products
Quad-band capable UMTS products will start to be shipped by Device vendors in 2008 (Most of these will
include 900MHz frequency band, especially in the non US markets)
Most Chipset vendors (QCT, EMP, Agere, NXP, Broadcom, etc.) are now focusing their efforts on multi
band solutions (more than 2 Bands)
7 to 9 frequency bands (as defined by ITU) are officially announced as included in Platforms
capabilities
3 to 4 bands as part of these can be easily implemented on a commercial devices from 2008
> Minor cost difference will allow general take-off of multi-band phones

Commercial Solutions can quickly be delivered to the Market upon Operators requests
UMTS 900MHz Frequency Band Support to Become Regular Feature by 2009

Handset Support for UMTS 900 Technology

Summary / Conclusion

UMTS900 technology is currently available and most platform providers are commercializing it
Commercial device vendors are starting to commercialize UMTS900 capable devices but expect
operators to commit to the technology to ship large volumes
First units shipped in 2007 (Handset & data cards) - larger phone portfolio expected in 2008 ; market
take-off in 2009
First UPA data card available by mid 2008, mobiles expected 1-2 qtrs after
