Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Allotted time: 10 minutes

Good afternoon everyone! On the board you will see a website link and the presenter code. Please go to the
website Zaption.com/join and enter the access code is 6XDHW. The next page will ask you to enter your name. Please
enter your first name and your last name. If anyone has any questions, raise your hand and I will come and help you.
*Give them about a minute* Is everyone ready? Okay, great! So as we watch this video together, there are going to
occasionally be questions that will pop up on your Chrome Book. You will watch the video on the Smart Board because
the video will only be played on that screen, once it pauses, then you will answer the questions on your own screen. If you
have any serious questions or comments about the video while it is playing, you can type the questions or comments on
your Chrome Book and it will be sent to the screen. *Turn down the front light so the board is easier to see* Im going to
start the video. *At 15 seconds* Okay, your first question asks you to recall the vocabulary. What is the definition of
recycle? Does it mean using less energy, to reprocess resources to be used again, protecting the environment and natural
resources against waste and harm, or being free from germs; being clean and healthy? *Give students about 15 seconds to
answer the question* Who can raise their hand and tell me what the definition of recycle is? *If no one responds, call on
Belle* Great! That is exactly right. Recycle is to reprocess resources to be used again. *Press play. At 56 seconds the
second question will pop up* The second question states, do you recycle in your own home? There isnt a right or wrong
answer, I just want to know how many of you recycle. *Press play. At 1:11 the third question will pop up* The third
question asks, an example of an item that can be recycled is a/an blank. I want you to recall from your own personal
knowledge and write down what you think you could be able to recycle. *Press play. At 2:06 the fourth question will pop
up* The fourth question asks you to check the four recyclable areas that are separated to be processed. *Give everyone
about 20 seconds to answer the question* Can someone raise their hand and tell me the only area that is not recyclable?
*If no one answers call on Antoni* Great, thats correct! The only area that is not recyclable is food. *Complete the last
minute of the video then turn on all of the lights* I wanted to start off with this video today because we are going to talk
all about recycling! This includes the benefits of recycling, some statistics about recycling, and the difference between
reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Learning Activities
Allotted time: 15 minutes

I am passing out guided notes for you to fill out as we go through the PowerPoint together. First we are going to
talk about the benefits of recycling. The first benefit of recycling is that it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills.
The second benefit of recycling is that is conserves natural resources. Does anyone know what a natural resources is? *If
no one answers call on Daniela* Right! Natural resources are resources that are provided by the Earth and they are not
manmade. For example, water, air, soil, and plants are examples of natural resources. The third benefit is that it saves
energy. Can someone raise their hand and tell me how they think recycling saves energy? *If no one answers called on
Daniel B.* The next benefit of recycling is that it helps sustain the environment for future generations. The fifth benefit is
that it prevents the need for more landfills and reduces the problems associated with trash and litter. The sixth benefit is
that it creates more jobs. Can anyone guess how many jobs that recycling has created? *If no one answers call on
Ricardo* Not quite but youre close! Recycling has created approximately 1.1 million jobs in the US. The last benefit of
recycling is that it reduces pollution.
Next, lets look at some statistics about recycling. Did you know that for every ton of paper that is recycled, 17
trees are saved? Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a light bulb for four hours. On average, one
household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper every year. Lastly, by recycling one aluminum can saves enough
energy to run a TV for 3 hours. Are these statistics surprising to you? Why or why not?
There are three different steps that you can take to lessen the amount of waste that you are producing. The first
step is to reduce. Reduce means to use fewer resources to begin with. For example, you should reduce the amount of a
product that you are using instead of wasting it. The second step is reuse. Reuse is when you reuse a product for another
purpose. In the picture on the board, you can see that someone has used old coke bottles to keep household goods in such

as soap, laundry detergent, etc. The third and final step is to recycle. Like we talked about earlier, recycle is to reprocess
resources to be used again.
Group Activity

Allotted time: 15 minutes

We are now going to do a group activity with the people that are at your table! I want each table to nominate one
person to be the leader of your group. *Give them 15-20 seconds to decide* Who are my leaders at each table? Great! I
want each leader to come up to the front of the room and choose two different items and take them back to your table.
*Give them a minute to get their items* Now, as a group you are going to come up with a list of different products that
you can make that reuses these items, similar to the old coke cans that were shown in the PowerPoint. I am passing out a
piece of paper to each group that you need to fill out as you complete the project. On the front of the worksheet it asks you
what your first item is, then underneath it you are going to make a list of as many different ideas as you can. I want at
least 8-10 different ideas for that item. You will then do this for your second item. After you have made your lists, as a
group you are going to choose what your favorite idea is. You can choose from either list. Then give your product a
creative name! Below the name you are going to answer the questions about your item and product. Number one asks, is
your item recyclable? This is referring to the item before you reuse it as your new product. The second question asks what
additional resources you would need to make your product. For example, tape, glue, etc. The third question asks what
your project will be used for. The last question asks how many uses you can get out of your product? Is this something
you will only use once? Or is this something that you can use multiple times? The last thing that I want you to do is draw
a picture of what you want your product to look like on the back of the piece of paper. I have colored pencils that you can
use as well! Does anyone have any questions before you get started? Great, you have 15 minutes to work on this before
we present! If you have any questions, please raise your hand and I will come around to help.
*While students are working we will be walking around the classroom to observe. This will help with classroom
management and classroom procedures. If students are stuck with ideas or having trouble with different ideas, I will tell
them they can open up one persons Chrome Book to look up ideas. During their work time we will give them a five
minute warning, a two minute warning, and a one minute warning to help keep them on task and give them an idea of the
time.*

Presentations
Allotted time: 8 minutes

Can we have Danielas group present their product idea please. Great job! Can we have Kevins group please
come up and present your product idea. Very creative! Ricardos group, it is your turn. Good job! Thank you for sharing.
Lastly Kelvins group, please present your product to class. Awesome job!

**While students are presenting, if the groups are not specific enough on the design aspects, the following questions will
be used to promote discussion and further learning.**
-Is this product something that you can use more than once?
-Or is this product something that you can only reuse once?
-If you can use it more than once, how often would you use it?
-What additional resources would you need to make your product?
-How did you come up with your product idea?
Closure/Review of Content:
Allotted time: 2 minutes

Thank you everyone for presenting your reused product ideas, they turned out really well! Just as a quick review,
can someone raise their hand and tell me one of the benefits of recycling? Perfect. Who can tell me another benefit of
recycling? Awesome! Now who can name one of the four recyclable areas? Great. Lastly, someone tell me another one of
the four recyclable areas? Thats correct! Thats all we have for today. I hope that you all learned something new about

recycling today! Please put all of your items back on the table before you leave and turn your guided notes into the purple
basket on my desk.. Have a great rest of your day!

Evaluation/assessment of student learning:
Allotted time: N/A

Informal Assessment - Conducted during student pre-assessment based on the questions that students answer during the
introduction/hook activity located on Zaption. During the product idea presentation, the students will again be assessed
based on their responses to further questioning. I will also walk around during the student work time and assess if all
group members are actively participating with their group members.

Formal (Formative) Assessment - The final product activity will be graded based on the Reduce Reuse Recycle Project
worksheet. The questions should be fully answered, and the picture should be neatly drawn on the back of the worksheet.
Students will also be formally assessed on the completion of their Lets Recycle! guided notes. Students will be given a
grade based on the completion of the Zaption activity.

Modifications for exceptional learners:
One modification that I could make for gifted/talented learners would be allowing them to physically make their
product if time allows. One modification that I added for ELL students was by including sentence frames throughout the
lesson. During professional development we learned that sentence frames are a simple modification that will help ELL
students because it sets up the sentence while still challenging the students by having them choose the correct brick words
for the activity. There are also pictures included throughout the PowerPoint to help ELL students. Another modification
that can be made for the lesson is by rearranging the groups for the activity. This would allow me to choose groups that
will work well together. It will also ensure that groups will have a variety of different learners in each group. Students
who are gifted/talented can help then students who are struggling or do not understand the activity.
