Central Focus
The central focus of this mini-lesson is for students to preview Esperanza Rising by exploring
what it is like to be an immigrant moving to a foreign country. The students will use their own
personal experiences or emotions to put themselves in Esperanzas shoes and make a personal
connection with her to become engaged in reading this novel.

This gets the students thinking about how


countries are different and how immigrants
experience culture shock when living in an
unfamiliar place. The students are in groups so
everyone has a turn to talk. If done as a whole
class, some students may not participate in the
discussion. This activity also builds up ideas for
narrative.
Activity
To make sure all students understand the
expectations of the assignment and know what
theyre doing. The graphic organizer helps them
put ideas together for narrative.
The students are given the rest of the class
period to write their narratives. The purpose of
writing the narratives is so the students
understand how it feels to be an outcast. When
reading the novel, they will understand the
characters emotions and connect with her on a
deeper level.
