Methods:
Whole Group Map Skills TTW utilize the world map to locate Greece, its surrounding
islands and the Mediterranean Sea. TTW discuss the physical characteristics of Greece on
the map.
Whole Group Introduction of Ancient Greece As a first day introduction, TTW explain how
ancient Greece has influenced modern day with regard to civilization, government, art,
architecture, and sports.
Whole Group Instruction of Center Activities TTW introduce each center and explain
procedures to successfully complete. TTW divide class into small groups of four and assign
each group a center. TTW inform students that rotations are every 10 minutes.
Small Group Centers TSW work collaboratively to complete each of the four center
activities
Require Learner Participation

Whole Group Map Skills:

During this time TTW call the class close to the world map and ask a student to locate
Greece on the map. TTW then call on other students to point out the surrounding islands
and the Mediterranean Sea. TTW inform students to mentally note these locations for a
map skills center activity. TSW be actively engaged because they are able to find the
locations rather than passively watching the teacher.
Whole Group Introduction of Ancient Greece:
As part of the first day introduction to ancient Greece, TTW will provide a verbal overview of
how ancient Greece has influenced modern day. TTW ask students to brainstorm
comparisons to teachers description of ancient Greek civilization, government, art,
architecture, and sports to what are found in modern times. (ex. Democracy, cities, art
museums, columns in buildings, Olympics). The brainstorming activities engage the
students and get them to connect something unfamiliar with what they know and
understand.
Whole Group Instruction of Center Activities:
TTW explain and demonstrate how to complete each center activity. TTW utilize the
overhead projector, map transparencies, and the WebQuest transparency as part of
demonstration. TTW further explain that each computer has a WebQuest document located
on the desktop. The students are to access their WebQuest web sites through the
document. TTW divide the students into groups of four where they will collaborate on each
center activity. TSW follow the teachers instructions for each center in order to successfully
complete the assignments. TSW be more passively engaged during the instruction;
however they will quickly become active participants once the groups are established.
Small Group Center Activities:
TSW work in groups of four to collaborate on each center activity. Each center rotation will
last ten minutes.
Map Coloring TSW locate Greece, the surrounding islands, and the Mediterranean
Sea on their maps and color the land tan and the sea blue. These maps will be used
in an Ancient Greece journal to be constructed in a subsequent lesson.
Painting Pots Each group will paint and decorate a clay pot according to artistic
designs found on ancient Greek pots. TTW break the pots for a future activity where
the students will then act as archaeologists and attempt to reconstruct the ancient
pottery.
Urn Tracing and Decorating TSW trace urns using the templates on tan
construction paper. They will then draw designs according to ancient Greek art. TSW
then cut out the urns as well as the designs. TSW glue black construction paper
behind design cutout so that the black color shows through the design.
WebQuest research TSW utilize classroom computers to conduct a WebQuest
research project for ancient Greece. TSW use the WebQuest word document to read
instructions and access approved website links. TSW log the research information on
the research chart. TSW use the ancient Greece library books to enhance any
information for their research.

Each of these center activities appeals to multiple intelligences. Kinesthetic learners are
allowed to manipulate paint, scissors, drawing, and the computer. Each activity is
visually stimulating for visual/spatial learners, especially the WebQuest where each web
site provides a wealth of information in a format that inspires the learner to want to
discover more. Interpersonal learners get to work closely with their peers and
collaborate on each project. These learners will also have the added benefit of ensuring
that their partners are successful. Verbal/linguistic learners are provided with a wealth of
information from the teacher. They also must discuss with their peers in order to
complete each task.
Evaluate & Revise
Student Performance:
The students will be evaluated on each center activity. The main focus will be map skills
and the WebQuest. TSW demonstrate an understanding of the geographic locations if they
color the correct locations on their maps. TSW demonstrate knowledge of ancient Greece
based on the information garnered and logged on each research chart. TSW also
demonstrate abilities to collaborate in each center if they complete the activities and
consciously work to ensure their partners understand and can complete the activities as
well.
Instructor Performance:
During the center activities the instructor can listen to the students explain the concepts to
each other, and begin to ascertain if the material was well taught. When the students turn
in their WebQuest research charts, and their maps, the teacher will have final confirmation if
the lesson fulfilled the stated objectives. If necessary the instructor can reteach the material
before the class moves on to more in-depth study of each aspect of ancient Greece.
Media Performance:
The media that was used serves as a gateway for the students to access a wide variety of
information on ancient Greece. If students are able to log research information that pertains
to each aspect of the chart, then the media was used successfully.
