Todays Special: Inequalities!

Knowledge goals:
- Definition of each of the inequality symbols (>, <, <, >)
- Inequalities can be represented verbally, graphically, or symbolically
Understanding goals:
- Students will understand what each inequality symbol means
- Students will understand graphing inequalities on a number line
Skill goals:
- Identify a numerical value that satisfies the inequality
- Demonstrate the steps in solving an inequality
- Apply their understanding of inequalities to form their own definitions
- Create a word problem that contains an inequality
I am using this learning menu with inequalities to help with sense-making
because students tend to have difficulty with these concepts. They usually
mix up which symbol is which, the meaning each symbol has, and how to
correctly graph on the number line. The learning menu is an effective
interest task because the different courses allow for different types and
levels of practicing the information. It allows students to display their grasp
on inequalities and the learning goals for the unit.
Directions: All the main dishes, one appetizer, and two side dishes need to
be completed by the due date. You are welcome to complete more than the
required number of appetizers or side dishes and any of the desserts that
you wish.

Appetizers:
Complete 1 of the following
1. Draw each in equality symbol. Next to the symbol explain it in your own
words as if you were explaining it to a younger sibling that didnt know what
an inequality is.
2. Provide two examples of inequalities in this classroom that we use
regularly and graph these examples on a number line.
3. Draw two images that show a type of inequality, write the inequality under
the picture, and graph in on a number line

Main Dishes:
Complete all of the following

1. Students will pick a worksheet based on their interest (Music, Sports, and
Video Games) and complete all problems 1-30 showing their work.
2. Pick five inequalities out of the textbook and create word problems based
on these inequalities.
3. Using what you know about inequalities, write me a short story where
there are at least two examples of inequalities. Highlight these examples in
the text. Make sure it makes sense!!

Side Dishes:
Complete 1 of the following
1. Students will watch a Kahn Academy video that explains how to solve
inequalities. Follow along with the video and complete the problems that are
presented on the screen.
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/one-variable-linearinequalities/alg1-one-step-inequalities/v/inequalities
2. Watch the inequalities Brain Prop and complete the activity or gam
associated with it.

/
Complete 1 of the following
3. Get with a partner, switch short stories, and solve the inequalities in your
partners short story.
4. Given the graphed inequalities on a number line create the symbolic
representation of these inequalities.

Desserts:
These are optional; complete them as an anchor activity or if you
have extra time
1. Explain where you see inequalities in your daily life. Provide two specific
examples and bring in something that shows this.
2. Complete the scavenger hunt problems that are placed around the room.
Each problem will lead you to the next problem.
