The Jabberwockys Tea Party

Name Heather St. Pierre

ID# 11

Undesirable Behavior Targeted: Off-task during class discussions: completing work for other classes, using cell

phones, side-bar conversations.

This interferes with learning because class discussions target specific learning objectives about the content of the
readings and application of literacy skills. Students who are off-task are unable to apply new concepts and skills
during group and independent work.
Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted: On-task: Recording notes for this class in assigned classroom journals

homework for other classes and cell phones put away under the desk, eyes are on the speaker or on journals,
pencils and pens are in-hand before discussion.
Types of positive reinforcements

1. Immediate R+: The class earns one word of the poem, Jabberwocky, if students are on-task when the timer goes
off. Timer will go off randomly throughout the class discussion.
2. Ongoing R+ Bulletin board displaying the poem that they are building.
3. Overall R+ - Character Mapping Tea Party for Alices Adventures in Wonderland: Student groups will analyze
characters from the book and create Facebook profiles for them on poster board. Students can bring foods and
beverages mentioned in the book to share while they create their projects.
4. Before the ongoing R+ begins, student groups will learn which character I assign them. When students earn a word
from the poem, which will be written on peel-and-stick labels, I will place them in an envelope on the board.
When transitioning to group work, the Board Helper for the day will retrieve the envelope and the class will
spend no more than five minutes placing them in the correct order.
Interactive Learning Activity: The Character Mapping Tea Party for Alices Adventures in Wonderland will happen as

soon as the Ongoing R+ is completed. Students will have time to gather any materials they would like to bring and
any foods they would like to contribute. Each group will be assigned one of the following characters to analyze
while reading the book using a graphic organizer: Alice, Cheshire Cat, The White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, and The
Queen of Hearts. Once the group has interpreted characteristics for each character and inferred other facts about
the character beyond the text, the groups will create on their poster board a Facebook profile for their character
that includes the characters interests, hobbies, physical traits (could be included in illustration or profile
picture), and any other information that may be explicitly stated in the book or that the students inferred using
evidence from the text. Once completed, students will walk around the room viewing other profiles and enjoy
the foods their classmates or tea party guests have brought.
TEKS: 110.19 (4) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Poetry, 110.19 (6) Reading/Comprehension of Literary
Text/Fiction. 110.19 (8) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Sensory Language. 110.19 (19 & 20) Oral and
Written Conventions/Conventions. 110.19 (28) Listening and Speaking/Teamwork
Teach the Desired Behaviors: The teacher will demonstrate what it looks like to take notes when other students are

talking. This will include writing down relevant and key points from the speakers ideas and adding elaborations for
ones own point of view. The teacher will also demonstrate how these notes contribute to the discussion by keeping
discussion points relevant and interactive.
Teach the Plan: The teacher will have the bulletin board prepared for the first day of the grading period. This will be

the first day of the unit that will include discussions about several works of fiction, including Alices Adventures in
Wonderland. The poem, Jabberwocky, will be the engagement activity for the first day. The teacher will read the
poem and discuss how students will earn one line of the poem when they are prepared for discussions with homework
for other classes put away.
Provide options: The teacher can adjust this plan in response to other behaviors such as students coming to class

without homework completed or without necessary materials. The reinforcements remain the same but the immediate
reinforcement can be given at the beginning of class when collecting homework.
