4. Demonstrate and model professional skills required in
elementary science and environmental education experiences
including: reading, writing, listening, speaking, problem solving,
teaching/learning in outdoor settings, and cooperative group work;
Name of artifact that demonstrates your competence in meeting
this objective:

Picture Perfect- Oil Spill Lesson Activity; for this activity my

classmates and I modified a lesson from the Picture Perfect Activities
book and co-taught it.

How does this artifact demonstrate your competency in meeting

this objective?

For this artifact my classmates and I used the picture perfect book to
create an activity for students in an elementary school close to
Raquette Lake, New York. Our college class took a trip to camp
huntingtin for a few days and while we were there we learned about
various activities. The activities were mainly outdoor activities that we
can incorporate in our future teaching practice.
One evening on our trip we had the opportunity to teach the lesson to
a group of students. In my post teaching reflection I noted how
surprised I was by some of the responses of the students. From this
experience I was able to learn how to communicate verbally and
nonverbally with my peers as well as how to adapt our activities while
we were teaching the students.

How does the artifact inform your thinking about teaching? Include
any other reflections and/or comments.

This activity helped me prepare for teaching experiences in different

geographical areas as well as different content area. This was my first
experience co-teaching science content. I realized how content
knowledge can be complex and can easily be linked with ELA or math
skills.
I hope to become a thoughtful and a responsive listener and observer
when working with other professionals. This experience has taught me
that I need to adapt more useful developmentally appropriate
strategies to foster a positive learning environment that incorporates
more than one content area.
