Nathan Nugent

Recommendation by George Leonard

Professor of Interdisciplinary Humanities
San Francisco State University
4/12/16
Over the course of three years I got to know Mr. Nugent
exceptionally well, as his teacher and writing mentor. He has taken two
of my courses, The Humanities: Major Works (Fall 2003) a course in
cultural literacy, and Humanism and Mysticism (Fall 2005), an
advanced course with challenging writing requirements and a
transformative museum experience at SFMOMA, receiving an A in both.
I was immediately impressed by his sophisticated interpretation and
comprehension of art, literature and spirituality. I found his papers to
be written at a high level and I read his stories outside class. I find that
he has kept all his college papers, for better than 10 yearsthat tells
you something. He loved school; it meant a lot to him. Im glad to see
that, in his maturity, he has decided to make it his profession.
He really can write, and you have to know how, to be able to
teach students how. In one of the first papers he ever submitted to me,
I wrote good technique in response to his stylistic choices quoting
research and thats it, how to look at the painting. I was referring to
his ability to interact with a piece of Renaissance art by placing his own
reaction in relation to its historical significance. Nugent is a strong
writer, and bound to be a fine teacher.
Mr. Nugent has already demonstrated that he is the kind of
independent energetic spirit who will inspire future generations of
students and thrive working in your school district. From his years of
interdisciplinary study in San Francisco, followed by international
employment, Mr. Nugent will offer his students a mature mans
multicultural perspective. After graduating in 2006, Mr. Nugent moved
to Germany and spent a year working for the Air Force, learning the
language, traveling and exposing himself to classic and modern
European culture and art (The Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, the
Memorial to the Murdered Jews in Europe in Berlin, just to name two on
his list that caught my eye).
Mr. Nugent aggressively competed for every opportunity SFSU
offered him and graduated on the Deans List in a journalism program
completed by only 70% of its candidates. I was so impressed by his
constant growth that I have kept much of his work on file even after he
stepped away from the university life for a decade. You cant go wrong
with him. Bear in mind when looking at his marks that he worked 30
hours a week while going to school full time! Your faculty,
administration and students will thank you for sending Nathan Nugent
to them.

Sincerely,
George Leonard
