Today we Celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ

The Reflection on the 3rd page, is from the 7th
Sunday of Easter. However our Readings are from
Thursday last, which was the 40th day after Easter.
We are also celebrating Mothers Day. The origin
of Mothers Day can be traced to the Roman and
Greek traditions, where they honored all the
mother goddesses during Spring. In the UK they
had a mothering day on the 4th Sunday of Lent, to
honor the Church, their Mother. It was, therefore
not the feast of our physical Mothers, but that of
goddesses and the Church. Since 1908, it has come
to mean honoring our own Mothers.
Catholics have long honored Mary the Mother of
Christ during the Month of May. There is a
tradition called Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May)
to honor Mary. During the past 9 days, the Filipino
Community from Pangasinan and others from all
over Oahu, have come our Parish for their Annual
devotion of Our Lady of Manaoag. Thank you for
your great love for Mary, the Mother of Christ.
Honoring Mary, the Mother of Jesus and loving
our own Mothers will bring us many spiritual
blessings.

St. John of Avila

Feast Day May 10

The Apostle of Andalusia and the spiritual

advisor of St. Teresa, St. Francis Borgia, St.
John of the Cross, St. Peter of Alcantara, and
others. He was born on January 6, 1499, at
Almodovar del Campo, Spain. After studying
law at the University of Salamanca, he left the
university to be a hermit. He then went to
Alcala, where he was ordained. John drew
great crowds with his fiery denunciations of
evil and his many sermons. A brief
imprisonment by the Inquisition in Seville
made him even more popular. His missionary
efforts were centered on Andalusia, and his
letters and other writings have become
Spanish classics. John was canonized in 1970

Next Sunday is PENTECO ST Sunday, the

celebration of the Descend of the Holy Spirit. The
Holy Spirit came down on the Apostles on the
50 th day after Easter. Pentecost means, the Fiftieth
Day.

their Annual Convocation at Turtle Bay Hotel
from Monday May 9 till Friday May 13. There
will be no Morning Masses from May 10 till May
13. Please pray for the Priests of the Diocese.

Today's Gospel reading is

the unity Gospel. It's the
prayer for the
Church
that
Jesus offered
up to heaven
shortly before
he offered his life in the crucifixion. In it, he makes a
sacrament out of relationships. As Jesus and the Father are one, we too are to
be one with each other, so
that by our witness of unity
permanent, committed, selfsacrificing,
unconditional
love we show the world
what God's love is like. We
prove to the world that God's
love is real: It's permanent,
committed,
unconditional,
and self-sacrificing no matter
how much one sins.

visual lesson for the world, a

or poor, with complete faithfulness. Marriage is meant to be a life of radical love, a
love that cannot be experienced outside the bonds of
permanent vows. In a sacramental marriage, the husband lays down his life to serve his wife, and the wife
lays down her life to serve her husband, just as Christ
laid down his life to serve us and we who are the
Church, the Bride of Christ, lay down our lives to follow
him and serve him.
Marriage is that sacred! This is the reason why a
Catholic priest cannot marry couples who have been

divorced until after an

investigation
proves
that previous marriages were not true unions. The unity of a
couple is as sacred as
the unity between Jesus and the Father
and as sacred as our
God-ordained mission
to reveal his love.
Other relationships when God has
formed them are sacred, too.
Each union created by God is a sacrament (the presence and power of
Christ for the world). Each relationship is meant to be a visual lesson
that teaches the world about the true
identity and salvation of Jesus.
How horrible how anti-evangelization are divisions within the Body
of Christ!!

1. List the people who are God's
gift to you.
2. Who used to be a gift but no
longer seems so due to hardships and relational difficulties?
What will you do for that person
this week to serve him or her in
love (even if they won't be able
to know about it)?
3. Describe a time when a loving
gesture from a friend, spouse,
parent, or someone else revealed to you God's love. Even if
you didn't realize it at the time,
how was this gift of love an answer to Jesus' prayer?
4. How is God building unity in your
home or parish as an answer to
Jesus' prayer?
