Plan for set-up/distribution/cleanup of materials:
The cover page of the book and the pages will be premade. A sample page will be made
before hand. The pages will be distributed by both student teachers. Students have their own
colored pencils or know where they are kept in the classroom and will be free to go get them as
they wish. About two minutes before the share, students will be told to clean up any materials. If
at the rug, the students will be told to hand their pages to either of us before returning to their
seats. If at the desks, students will pass their papers to us.
Step by Step plan (numbered):
1. (Megan) We will have the students remain in their seats. I will tell the students that we will be
talking about respect today. I will ask, what does respect mean? I will take three responses. I will
write the responses on the board. We will play the short video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Jcl-5wlzn4&index=34&list=PLzvRx_johoA-YabI6FWcUjL6nKA1Um-t
2. After the video I will say that Kid President gave us simple ways to make the world even
better. Kid President suggested that we can make the world even more awesome!
3. I will help the students create an anchor chart for the word respect. Above the brainstorming
chart, I will have pre wrote the word respect and the definition, a feeling or understanding that
someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way. It
will be covered for the brainstorming. Next, I will ask what comes to your mind when I say the
word disrespect?
4. I will repeat the process for the word disrespect. I will have the word disrespect and the
definition, Rude, offensive, impolite. Expressing little regard for a person, place, or thing.
5. (Kristen) I will tell the students we are going to practice being awesome by trying to fix some
examples when people have not been too nice. I will split the class into three groups using
popsicle sticks or the columns they are seated in. They will be directed to a different part of the
room (rug, front table, desk area).
6. Each group will be given a different scenario and must figure out the problem and find ways to
make it awesome.

7. Students will return to their desks and each group will share their scenario and describe the
problem and solutions that came up with.
8. After going through each problem, I will tell the students that since they are experts in
showing respect, we will make our own Guide to Being Awesome book just like Kid President.
The only difference is we will title our book 3Hs Guide to Being Awesome in the Classroom. I
will explain to the students that they will each get to create a page in the book. They will come
up with one way to be awesome in the classroom and write it on the lines. They also need to
draw a picture. Megan and I will present a sample.
9. Megan and I will pass out the pages and the students will begin working. The students will be
asked to hold onto their pages so everyone can share it with their classmates. This can be done on
the rug or at their seats with one student standing in front of the class. I will tell the students that
we will make it into a book that we will keep in the classroom.
