Demonstrates knowledge and ability to assess and manage
surgical incision and wound care to facilitate healing:

One significant learning experience that enabled me to advance

my knowledge to assess and manage surgical incisions and
wound care to facilitate healing is when we spent a whole week
specifically on how manage a surgical wound to promote
healing. Specifically we learnt the importance of monitoring
the wound for colour and drainage. By attending theory and
reviewing the slide shows I was given a greater understanding
of what to monitor when caring for a patient with a surgical
wound.
By attending theory and lab and getting a greater understanding
of the stages that a surgical wound can experience while going
through the healing process I will be better able to care for my
patients and provide care that will promote their healing.
Specifically we learnt to monitor the colour of the wound
ensuring that there was not any evidence of infection. Other
things that we were taught to monitor for were drainage and the
type and amount being discharged, also that we should note
how the edges of the wound are in terms of how approximated
the edges are, as well as checking that there is not any evidence
of tunneling of the wound. This knowledge is important for me
to have so that when I face a client that is dealing with some
form of wound I will be able to properly care for them in a way
that will promote healing, and reduce the risk of infections.

For this competency I would rate my proficiency as fair. I feel

that I have worked hard in lab and theory to gather the most
information that I can in order to provide my patients with the
best care that I could provide. I find that although I have
practiced caring for wounds in lab I am still unaware of how a
real person will react to the procedure. I believed that my
personal rating of this proficiency will increase once I have
cared for patients with a wound and I get more practice. By
actively participating in lectures and labs I feel that I have
developed skills that will allow me to care for a clients wound
in s proper manner as to promote healing.

By learning these skills and having knowledge about wounds I

feel that I will have a better understanding as to how to proceed
when my clients require wound care, and when it is appropriate
to empty drains or repack wounds. While I am still in school I
will use this knowledge to help me advance in lectures by
contributing to lectures, and in labs when working on case
studies to ensure that my skills are appropriate for the
circumstance. As I advance my career I hope to become more
proficient in this competency. I will apply this skill with great
understanding and confidence in my skill.
