Lesson Plan
Topic: Atoms and the Periodic Table of Elements
Grade Level: 10th-11th Grade
Common Core:
HS-PS1-1 Matter and its interactions
Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of
elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
[Clarification Statement: Examples of properties that could be predicted from
patterns could include reactivity of metals, types of bonds formed, numbers of
bonds formed, and reactions with oxygen.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is
limited to main group elements. Assessment does not include quantitative
understanding of ionization energy beyond relative trends.]
MS.PS1.A Structure and properties of matter
Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and
extended structures. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on developing models of
molecules that vary in complexity. Examples of simple molecules could include
ammonia and methanol. Examples of extended structures could include sodium
chloride or diamonds. Examples of molecular-level models could include drawings,
3D ball and stick structures, or computer representations showing different
molecules with different types of atoms.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does
not include valence electrons and bonding energy, discussing the ionic nature of
subunits of complex structures, or a complete description of all individual atoms in a
complex molecule or extended structure is not required.]
RST.9-10.7
Translate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text
into visual form (e.g., a table or chart) and translate information expressed visually
or mathematically (e.g., in an equation) into words.
Goals:
Students will learn the basic characteristics of atoms; i.e. Protons, Neutrons, and
Electrons.
Students will learn about the periodic table of elements and how its ordered in
relation to atomic number and mass number.
Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge by using atomic number and
mass number to identify elements.

Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge by identifying an elements

protons and neutrons by looking at the periodic table.
Lesson Plan:

Intro/Pre assessment (4 min)

o If you look at your desks youll see what were going to learn about
today.
Elements and Subatomic Particles
Can anyone give examples of a subatomic particle?
o What is chemistry?
Chemistry Definition: The study of matter.
If matter is anything that has mass and takes op space
then chemistry is the study of things
o Element
Element definition: The smallest amount a substance can be.
Cannot be broken down by chemical means
Atom (Draw on board)
Nucleus
Electron cloud
o *Transition* So now what makes up an atom?
Parts of an atom (8 min) (12 min total)
o Proton (2 min)
Location: In the nucleus
Charge: +1
Purpose: We will come back to that
o Electron (2 min)
Location: Electron cloud
Charge: -1
Purpose: Bonding and charge of a molecule
We will cover this another day
o Neutron (2 min)
Location: Nucleus
Charge: Neutral
Clarify because its common to think it is -1
Purpose
Amount: usually has the same amount as protons
o Class Practice Problem (Dry Erase Marker Required) (1 min)
*Draw atom on the board* ask students to locate each
subatomic particle
o Solo Practice Problem (1 min)
3 Word Problems describing the subatomic particles. Students
must identify which is which
Found in the nucleus but will not have a charge? Neutron
Not found in the nucleus but my -1 charge helps with
bonding? Electron
Found in the nucleus but has a charge? Proton

o What is the protons charge? +1

*Transition* now that we know what the parts of an atom are how can
we use them?
Periodic Table (21 min) (29 min total)
o Overview of what the periodic table is(put periodic table on the board)
(1 min)
Layout (will go into more detail about this in elemental trends
section)
Metals
Nonmetals
Noble Gasses
Cutout Portions
o
o Symbol (2 min)
Name of element
Abbreviation
If two letters first is capitalized second isnt
Why some symbols dont match their names? Latin
Solo Practice Problem (1 min)
Students will try to name 3 elements from the periodic
table from their symbol
o C? Carbon
o He? Helium
o Pb? Lead *more difficult*
o Atomic #(2 min)
What it is
Shows an elements place on the periodic table
How to find it
Number of protons an element has in its nucleus
Class Practice Problem (2 min)
Student will come to the board, Draw Protons into an
atom, The rest of the class will Identify it
o Nitrogen-7 protons
o Chlorine-17 protons
o Silver(Ag)-47 protons
Pairs Practice Problem(will have access to a periodic table) (4
min)
Students will have to identify 4 Elements based on the
atomic # given
o 11-(Na)Sodium, 25-(Mn)Manganese, 12(Mg)Magnesium, 104-(Rf)Rutherfordium
Students will have to identify the Atomic # of 4elements
based on Symbol given
o Ne-Neon 10, Li-Lithium 3, O-Oxygen 8, Au-Gold 79
o

Assessment: (Graded)

A sheet of paper with all in class practice problems will be collected

Additional Material: If time allows go into size of elements
Mass # (3 min)
What is it: the average of the mass of the isotopes of that
element
Brief Isotopes definition: Elements can have number of
neutrons in the nucleus
o Example C13
How do you find it: Add the number of protons and neutrons
Why arent Electrons involved?
o Because theyre SUPER TINY
What is it used for: How heavy it is
Chemical reactions (will learn in later chapter)
Solo/Pairs Practice Problem (3 min)
Class will be given 2 elements and be asked to find their
Mass #
o F-~18, Ca-~20
o Explain why we arent : Isotopes
Class will be given two Mass # and must find the
elements they are associated with
o ~12-C,~27-Al
o Explain New Elements Briefly (1 min)
(Depending on time assessment will go before game)
o
