DoddaballapurtalukhascreatedwavesbyearningaprofitofaboutRs.22lakhayearfrommerely2.1acresofland.
Itishisinnovativedriveandconstantexperimentationwithmulticroppingmethodsthathavehelped51yearoldH.Sadanandatoreapa
richharvest.
Hecultivatesnearly30varietiesofcroponhisland,includingtomatoandarecaonhalfanacreeachwhichyieldhimRs.2lakhandRs.
50,000respectively.
Gingeriscultivatedalongwitharecaintheplantation,andityieldshimaboutRs.70,000ayear.Mr.Sadanandahasalsomadespaceinhis
arecaplantationforrearing250GirirajahenswhichhesellseverythreemonthstoearnaboutRs.1lakhayear.Thepoultrydroppingsare
valuablemanureforthearecaplantationwhileagriculturalwasteisusedasfeedforthebirds.
Hehasplantedabout2,000rosecuttingsonthreefourthofanacre,whichfetcheshimaboutRs.4lakhayear,andhassetupagreenhouse
ononefourthofanacreforcultivatingcapsicumandhighqualityrosealternatively.Capsicum,cultivatedforaboutsixmonths,yieldshim
aboutRs.5.4lakhwhiletherosevarietythatreplacescapsicumforthenextsixmonthsgetshimaboutRs.2.5lakhayear.Asmallvegetable
garden,afishrearingpond,coconutandjackfruittreesontheperipheryofhisland,inadditiontocoffeeplants,papaya,sapotaandlime
treesalsofindaplace.Hiscowsproduce80to100litresofmilkaday.
Manure
Manurecomesfromvermicompostandtheslurryfromagobargasplant.Atinypondisfilledwithazollaplantswhichisagoodcowfeed.
Mr.Sadananda,whodependsonborewellforirrigation,hasinstalleddripirrigationsystemfortheentirelandatacostofRs.50,000
(excludingsubsidy).Dripirrigationallowsmetoirrigatemyentirelandevenwithfourhoursofthreephasepower,hesays.Besides,it
preventsweedsandalsosaveshimaboutRs.400adayinlabourcosts.
Interestingly,healsobreedsRottweilerandGreatDanebreedsofdogstoearnRs.1.2lakhayear.
HehasbeenhonouredwithprestigiousawardsbytheUnionMinistryofAgriculture.Severalagriculturalscientists,farmersandVIPsfrom
Indiaandabroadvisithisfarm.
