After the Ambush

Sudden silence settles in,
As if everything were truly settled,
As if the very air was clean
Of soot and smell
Of burnt hair terraced like steps.
Sky like sheets of cellophane;
Cold creeps back in;
A cat rubbing up against legs.
Adrenaline drains from limbs
Like chai from the cup
You were drinking with the elder
Now lying amongst still warm brass,
Arms extended with one leg raised
As if climbing stairs one at a time.
Sand is rusted with what seeps out.
His head turned towards you
With one eye and mouth open,
As if for one final time to say
Only what he can now tell you
What you will now never know
Until you two can talk again.

American Dream of Innisfree

I would like to go and get up now!
Lets enter a Thomas Kinkade portrait
With a log cabin and a cold creek
Its spring water running through rocks.
I would want rocks placed in the brook
For balance and symmetry.
No bean rows for me but a fir tree;
Its boughs capped with snow
And a painters brush to touch up
The highlights just for show.
Its a fantasy I dream about
But would never really want to go.

I Am Most Amazed
At the selfishness
Of an empty milk carton
Left in the fridge
Now there is only
Dry cereal dry
For breakfast I was
So looking forward to.

Beauty of the Beast

It's an old joke you know
A man and a woman marry
Thinking one will change
The other will stay the same
Like layers of an onion
You can peel all you want
Center of a tootsie roll pop
What will the world ever know
Belle knows the beast
Is really a handsome prince
If she could just, just...
What are the bruises from
She's just so clumsy
Love will find a way
Lionel Richie says so
Nice guys well you know
Kiss a frog all you want
What's the definition of insanity
Some are even poisonous
Maybe we just love the beast

Dromedary
The over indulgence of strip malls
With 20 oz. cups forbidden
Elsewhere so you have two 20 oz.
Per hand endure them while you can
Black mosaic asphalt, bottle caps
Pennies for rainy days 90 days gone
But today you're the supplicant
As you push your two page resume
Across, she looks up, smiles, braces
Experience; retail? with tight eyes
Half windsor puckered just so
In the final act of this play
You might actually be the manager
Look up on screen, Mr. President, winking
Walk the aisles feigning, anything
It's funny how they do you
Then they don't
That's exactly how they do

21 |P a g e

Sin Eaters
It's funny how they do you
Then they don't
That's what they like to do
They'll have your six
Until the twelve
Then you'll be the one
They'll say it's noon
And when you look
You'll wonder where's the sun
You're on the list
But not your name
No matter how you wait
It's always still the same
They'll call it clear
And when you're near
You'll learn its green on blue
It's funny what they do
Then they don't
And that's exactly how they do
