FIRST SEMESTER
1- Basics of Architecture design & Geometrical Drawing (1):
- Number of hours (weekly) 10 practical hours
- Weighting scoring system: 50 % (sessional work) 2 projects, 25 % 2 interim exams, 25 % final
exam (class covers 2 semesters)
- Course description:
The course aims to provide the basic understanding of the of architecture design fundamentals
and graphic expression tools & techniques in 2D & 3D environment.
Introduction to basic geometrical elements like point, line, plane, solid and void etc.
Graphical expression for 2D environments elements such as: plan, section, elevation.
orthographic projection of design elements to create 3D objects using: one point & 2 points
perspective, axonometric & isometric views
Process of architectural drawings including site layout, plan, section & elevation, details
Introduction to drafting systems (scale, dimensions, codes and symbols, lines, etc.)
Understanding Design principles like Balance, Rhythm, Harmony, Contrast, Symmetry, Scale,
Proportions etc. leading to unity & creativity in design.
Understanding the relationships between architectural spaces, forms & order in terms of function,
beauty & durability.
The importance climatology consideration of the site location, the orientation, materials, etc.
Sessional works include 4 interim exams, plus 4 projects (2 each semester), introduction the
elements of the habitat (Arabic House).
2- Free-hand drawing & Model making (1):

- Course description:
The course aims to introduce the student to visual arts to understand the principles of design in
abstract.
Techniques of Arts Drawing architecture sculpture painting - models Industrial art.
Sessional work including sketch drawing every class plus assignment with (pencil, charcoal, ink,
china ink and coloring & model making as well).
3- Mathematics, Mechanics and Statics (1):
- Number of weekly actual hours: 2 (theoretical), 2 (practical)
- Weighting scoring system: 20 % interim exam, assignment, 80 % final exam.

Applications of the differential equations in the solution of some moving problems, the analytic

Definition, vertical projection on two perpendicular surfaces (Mauge Method)

geometric projections.

Remedial Grammar skills: main verb form & tenses, negative question and answers, modal verbs,
the passive, passives, modal verbs, nouns & articles, reported speech.
Usage of the oral skills to functional communication with all aspects of daily life through
dialogues.
Improving Listening comprehension, understanding listening process, the barriers, via authentic
materials and exercise on architectural engineering topics.

- Course description:
Understanding design methodology processes & operations including: data collection, site
analysis, climate & environment consideration, space program & end-user requirements, area
analysis, bubble diagram, design matrix, evolution of plan, relationship between plan & exterior
form & elevations, application of design theme and unity, application of design by-laws.
Application of the graphical skills and 3-dimensional presentation techniques to express the
totality of design concept.
Sessional works includes 4 interim exams and 4 projects on actual sites (2 each semester),
suggested building types are villa (old Arabic style, Modern style), dispensary, small
administrational center, workshop, Gymnasium, students hostel, motel,etc.
Viva-voce by examiner at the end of each project

Definition of basic principles of executive design & drafting systems in plans, sections and
elevations: (codes, symbols, lettering, axis, levels, materials hatches, cross-referencing, etc.)

Simple Beams, Fixed beams with concentrated load and uniformly distributed load (over
complete span, Categliante theory (Maxwell low), loads theory.
Continuous beams (without settlement) with uniform sections by three moments. Only vertical
load and uniformly distributed load over whole span by theorem of three moments.
4- Theories of Architecture (2):

international style, Post-modern & deconstruction.

fixed beam, over hanging beams, continuous beams, Portal frames etc.

Islamic Arab architecture, Islamic urban planning, Roman architecture in Europe, Gothic
architecture, architecture in the Renaissance period, the architectural influences of Arab on the
Modern European Architecture.
5- Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning:

- Course description:
Definition of basic terms used in air-conditioning system and plants
Air-conditioning and Air-cooling principles & calculations (air-chiller, DX-system, Split System),
the implications on Architectural Forms and details.
Systems & methods and Equipment of Air conditioning
Hot water systems, central heating equipment, boilers systems & calculations.
6- Electrical Installation:

- Course description:
Light: unit of measure, light production and luminous sources, illumination of dwelling places,
business centers, offices, hospitals, factories, gardens, statues and pools, streets, and important
buildings facades.
Sound: Noise definition, protection against noise, sound insulation, measurement of the
insulation, theories of sound conditioning, application of the theories on sound conditioning.
Direct current circuits, alternative current cyclone. Tri phase cycles, voltage degree in cables, the
electrical and technical installation in the buildings.

Providing a case studies training on different writing tasks like reports, proposals, e-mails, user
manuals and product data sheets etc. also the technicalities of writing like editing and proof

The practical training is a compulsory requirement, where the student should attend at least 120
Hour of training either at a governmental body or a private sector consultant firm, including
office training on design, and site supervision on an ongoing construction works
Full detailed report and authorized certificate of attendance should be submitted for a Viva-Voce
where the student interviewed and questioned accordingly.

Introduction to Specification, Method of drafting specification, CSI, Syrian reference handbook
MIF, numbering system, international & local standard, reference to contract document.

- Course description:
Basic principle of real-estate regulations, definition of the real-estate laws and its sub divisions in
Syria, types of land property in Syria and property rights (Amiri, private, public), cooperative
society neighborhoods planning, collusion agreement dependence, (register of real estate
properties).
Basic principles of real-estate feasibility study, calculation of income, calculation of returns, ROI,
IRR, discount rate.
6- Foreign language (5).

- Course description:
The course will run as a seminar with an interactive approach. Getting the students effective
contribution to group discussions, simulations and case studies.
Methods of academic verbal communication such as seminars, conferences, convention, congress,
debates, panel discussions, extempore speeches etc.
Presenting simple, complex, architectural concepts and proposal with the help of text, drawings,
transparencies, slides, video, photographs, models etc.

SECOND SEMESTER
1- Diploma Project/ Graduation project:
- Number of weekly actual hours:18 (practical)
- Course description:
The project should encompass the totality of the academic study in all years, to deal with an
actual architecture problem or society need based on city or country plans.
The project is composed of following stages: data collection, schematic design, pre-final design,
final design, and final presentation. The student work is to be followed by tutor of 3 doctors.
An approval is conducted at the beginning for the selected topic, and then an intermediate review
after schematic design, final presentation is done in the presence of 7 doctors with at least 2
external examiners.
The presentation of Final design should have the following:
a. Architecture proposal (presented in a sufficient number of sheets to explain the design)
b. Construction details/working drawings
c. Urban planning approach in terms of site planning and surrounding zone.

c. appropriate service details for HVAC, firefighting, drainage & water supply, electric light &
power, installation systems.

The student should submit a detailed report containing analysis of the existing problem and the
approach of the design solution with necessary drawings, measurements records, log sheets,
observations, surveying data.
