Mini-Mendeleev Activity
Instructions: In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev constructed his Periodic Table of the Elements by
arranging elements based on their known properties. You, like Mendeleev, have been given a set of
elements to arrange. With no outside resources, you must arrange the cards into groups based on
these similarities. Then, order the members of each group in a logical way, and arrange the groups
relative to each other. Finally, sketch the resulting arrangement in the space below:
Summary questions:
1. How did you determine which elements were in the same group?
2. How did you determine the order of the elements within each group?
4. A new element has just been discovered! This element is radioactive and decays very quickly,
so not much is known about the element, but it was discovered to have an electronegativity of
2.2 and an atomic radius of 148 pm. Where would you place the new element on your miniperiodic table above? Why?
