Thermodynamics Homework 1: Chapter 3

1. Energy Balance where work, power heat and energy conversion are involved
(a)
Complete Homework 3.9 and 3.10 as a review of your Physics and Fluids.

(b)

Supplementary consider the engine of the truck as it is driving as steady speed.

- The overall conversion efficiency of the engine is 33% from combustion of fuel to shaft
work to the wheels.
- The heating value of diesel fuel is 45.4 MJ/kg (38.6 MJ/litre).
- Draw a schematic diagram of the engine, and identify the energy flows
- Find the energy consumption rate for the truck in litres per hour
- What is the heat transfer rate from the engine? Comment on the heat transfer processes
that remove this heat from the engine, and identify the engineered heat transfer
equipment used.

2. Expansion and Compression Work

Dont forget to draw the gas in a piston assembly and show which direction work and heat are
being transferred.

3. Energy Balance with Heat, Work, Internal Energy

4. Thermodynamic Cycles - Power Cycles and Refrigeration
