Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to make discoveries and observations on what
would happen in the zip lock bag when the variety combinations of three substances are
mixed together.
Introduction
This experiment was conducted to mix any combination of two solid chemicals and one
liquid chemical together in a zip lock bag at the same time and make observations. The
chemicals included citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride, bromothymol blue,
and water. The three mixture picked out of the combinations for this experiment were
citric acid/ sodium bicarbonate + bromothymol blue, sodium bicarbonate/calcium
chloride + water, and citric acid/ sodium bicarbonate + water.
The hypothesis was that the mixture of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate would turn
another color when bromothymol blue was added because a new substance would be
formed when gas was produced. The mixture of sodium bicarbonate and calcium chloride
and water would be in liquid state. The substances would not react. The mixture of citric
acid, sodium bicarbonate and water would be in liquid state and there would be
settlements. The solid chemicals would react and produce gas.
