1.0

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this procedure is to define the methods of erection of Structural


Steel, namely the N-S and E-W pipe racks in Zawiya Terminal Facilities. The
procedure target is to help the site personnel to execute the job in a planned,
controlled manner and in accordance with the relevant codes and contract
requirements.
2.0

SCOPE
The scope of work covered by this procedure includes the N-S and E-W pipe
racks erection in Zawiya Terminal Facilities. In support of the works, reference
shall be made to the following:

3.0

SAFETY
Safety shall be of paramount importance to prevent any possible danger to the
public and site personnel. All pipe rack activities shall be closely monitored by
the Project Safety Advisor.
Site personnel shall adhere to the site safety policies at all times with emphasis
on the following precaution measures :

RESPONSIBILITIES
Construction Manager
Responsible to the Site Manager for :

Planning and acquisition of labour resources

Ensuring the smooth and on-time execution of the works, according to schedule

Liasing with the Operators Construction Manager regarding the progress of


works

Originating the weekly or bi-weekly reports


Mechanical Engineer
Responsible to the Construction Manager for :

Co-ordination of all pipe rack activities in progress.

Determining the plant and equipment to be used during the above operations

Ensuring plant and equipment is in suitable, safe working condition and


certified /
calibrated as necessary.

Supervising the Mechanical Foreman(en) for proper execution of the works

Reviewing site daily generated documentation and recording all as-built


information

Liasing with Operators Mechanical Engineer to resolve any related problems


Mechanical Foreman
Responsible to the Mechanical Engineer for :

Supervision and control of all stages of pipe rack erection, i.e. transportation of
finished, primed racks in-situ, erection of the same and checking of their proper
installation and alignment.

Assignment of the proper groups (gang leaders, tradesmen etc.) needed to carry
out the job.

Ensuring that all the pipe rack works are executed in good workmanship and
according to the approved drawings

Ensuring the safe progress of the works

Preparing all the necessary equipment, plant and tools, required for the job

Monitoring all tests and measurements related to the pipe racks and informing
the Mechanical Engineer accordingly.

Feeding regularly, the site with necessary pieces of pipe racks to be erected.
Materials Controller
Responsible to the Construction Manager for :

Receiving, handling and storing of the materials.

Releasing the necessary pieces to be erected

Liasing with the Operators Materials Controller for a close monitoring of the
materials

Informing the Mechanical Engineer on all aspects related to his duties


Project Safety Officer
Responsible to the Site Manager for :

Conducting regular safety inspections during pipe rack erection and ensuring
that all necessary safety precautions (see paragraph 3.0) are being taken.

Implementing the site contingency procedure in the event of an incident.

5.0

CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE
The following steps will be followed during erection of the pipe racks :

All structural members shall be sandblasted and painted at the painting shop in
accordance with the painting procedure.

Installation and bolting of the vertical members (beams) on their relevant


concrete bases

Vertical alignment of the same by means of suitable shims and wedges.


Alignment check by use of aluminium levels.

Installation of the horizontal members (beams) of the pipe racks

Horizontal alignment of the same and check of their horizontality by means of


aluminium levels

Erection of the bracings (reinforcements)

Height checking of the as-built pipe racks

Pouring of grouting between the base plates of the vertical members and the
racks concrete bases

Cleaning and paint touch-up where required.


RECORDS
All the above-mentioned checks (see paragraph 5.0) will be recorded in proper
forms as per Appendix 1 and made available to the Operators Engineer upon
request. The relevant pipe rack drawings will be updated, if necessary, and
submitted as part of the As-Built documentation.

7.0

EQUIPMENT
The following equipment shall be used for pipe rack erection :

Air Compressors

Trailer Flat Bed w/Prime Mover

Power Tools

Pick-Ups

Generators (for lighting if required)

Welding Sets

Airless Spray Machines
