Isolated footing:

An isolated footing is placed at a depth of 1m from the ground surface. The soil deposit
having the following properties:
Properties
H1
2
Youngs Modulus (kN/m )
2.06e3
Cohesion (kN/m2)
19.40
Bulk unit weight (kN/m3)
17.00
Friction angle
24.73
Poissons ratio
0.3
The soil is considered to follow the Mohr Coulomb failure criterion, and the footing is
considered using a plate element having axial stiffness (EA) = 2.35e8 kN/m, flexural rigidity
(EI) = 1.958e7 kNm2/m, Poissons ratio = 0.2. the interface element is considered between the
footing and the soil, the strength reduction factor (Rinter) of 2/3 is considered.
The loading conditions that are employed are prescribed displacement and prescribed
concentrated load.
The bearing pressure as obtained from the Meyerhofs bearing capacity theory is obtained to
be 805.1kN/m2 whereas from the PLAXIS solution it is obtained to be 809.27 kN/m2.
The mesh is generated in such a way that the straight radial lines emerges and extends upto
vertical and horizontal extreme boundaries and the size of elements increases with an
increase in radial distance.

Figure 4: Effective mean stress sadings.

The extreme mean effective stress generated is 628.56 kN/m2.
Extreme effective normal stress generated below the footing is 982.46 kN/m2 and the
equivalent force generated is 1.01e3 kN/m.
