Abstract

The Autunian deposits of Muse are famous for their

paleontological richness and in particular for the "fish bed"
in which Aeduellidae (Pisces, Actinopterygii) are
particularly abundant. While the history of this fossiliferous
site is well documented after the 1830s, the first
paleontological and geological researches, which have been
conducted there before this period, are still poorly known.
An unrecorded manuscript by Alexander von Humboldt
reveals that he had studied in March 1805 the geology of
the Autun area where he recognized the Zechstein. As
mentioned in the journal Feuille du Canton de Vaud, the
discovery of the first fishes from Muse is attested back in
the year 1811.These early discoveries were made by two
French naturalists and geologists, Franois-Joseph Lain
and Prosper Cyprien Brard. Thereafter, in the 1820s, many
fossil fishes from Muse were collected by Augustin Henri
de Bonnard. Specimens of Aeduella blainvillei (AGASSIZ,
1833), which could be among the first discoveries made in
Muse, have been identified in the collections of the MuSe
cantonal de Gologie in Lausanne and the MuSum
national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris. This inventory enabled
to rediscover several specimens from Alexandre
Brongniart's Collection that could belong to the material for
which Henri-Marie Ducrotay de Blainville erected the
species "Palaeothrissum inaequilobum" and
"Palaeothrissum parvum". The posterior part of one of the
Agassiz' types of "Palaeoniscus voltzii", which were
considered as lost for a long time, has been also identified.

showing a slab of shale from Muse with two Aeduella
blainvillei is presented. The slab was kept in the natural
history Cabinet of BarthLmy Faujas de Saint-Fond. This
drawing might be the oldest representation of fossil fishes
from this locality made before the first figures published in
1833 and 1834 by Louis Agassiz in his Recherches sur les
poisons fossiles. Paleoichthyological discoveries made in
Muse and Igornay by Landriot, Selligue and Hricart de
Thury in the 1830s are also highlighted. Finally,
unpublished manuscripts written around 1824 reveal the
different opinions of Ami Bou, Alexander von Humboldt
and Augustin Henri de Bonnard on the stratigraphic
position of the bituminous shale of the Autun area, well
before the Permian was created by Roderick Impey
Murchison in 1841.
