Topic: Livestock Treatment
Exploring First Thoughts
There are many things I like and dont like about food. I like different sandwiches like
burgers and grilled cheeses. I like different types of salads like fruit salads, garden salads, and
chicken salads. For the most part I like all types of food, mexican, fried, and italian. But the only
thing I dont like about food is that most of it is genetically altered in some ways, most meats
arent treated correctly and not fed and grown well. Food has a lot of problems with it now. Food
is used to make money instead of for enjoyment. The market is set up to where if you cannot
afford the better food, you will have to eat the food that is not as healthy for you. The non
genetic food, that is not as processed and has been fed natural feed is more costly. The food
that has all the mutations and dna changes to it cost less money. Every human has a right to
healthy, clean, natural food.
My topic is Livestock Treatment. Livestock is not treated correctly, and some is correctly
treated. Most big time meat companies like Tyson do not treat their livestock correctly. They

feed their animals corn instead of grass, the living conditions for them are uncleanly and filled
with waste, the companies make the farmers feed the animals growth hormones to make them
grow faster and bigger than their natural state. The animals grow too big for them to even
support their own body mass. The animals living conditions are so dirty that they get sick,
forcing farmers to give them antibiotics to keep them healthy. Naturally, if the animals are fed a
good natural food (grass) there immune systems would be able to fight off any sickness, but the
animals are not fed correctly. Antibiotics and all the other unnatural growth hormones that are
feed to the livestock cause problems in humans once consumed. Different diseases can occur
over time if these chemicals are consumed.
Topic: Generating Questions
What antibiotics are given to the livestock?
What are anti-biotic?
What type of physical abuse happens to the livestock?
Why are the living conditions for the livestock so dirty and filled with waste from the animals?
What are the side effects of antibiotics on the human body?
Topic: Rough Draft of Essay
Although not all farms are factory farms and treat their animals correctly, there many
farmers treating their animals humanely physically, by what they feed them and where they are
raising them.
Today, dairy cows have been genetically altered to produce 12 times more milk than
what they would normally produce to feed their calf(animal welfare institute). Yes this raises the

production of milk, but this puts unbelievable stress on the cows and also makes the cows
keepable for only 4 years before slaughter. This is physical abuse towards the animals. Chicken
are also fed growth hormones to make their breast grow faster and bigger. The chickens grow
so heavy that there legs break because they cannot support their bodies anymore. Chickens
raised for their flesh, called broilers by the chicken industry, spend their entire lives in filthy
sheds with tens of thousands of other birds, where intense crowding and confinement lead to
outbreaks of disease. Theyre bred and drugged to grow so large so quickly that their legs and
organs cant keep up, making heart attacks, organ failure, and crippling leg deformities
common (peta). Chickens are smart animals that do feel and and fear when going through
these processes.
Secondly, the animals living conditions are nasty and filled with their own body waste.
When chickens are transported,Theyre crammed together by the tens of thousands on top of
their own waste, never seeing daylight (ASPCA). Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations
which tend to be really nasty places (whats the difference). These living conditions are dirty and
filled with disease. Cattle are raised in the same conditions. The feedlot air is saturated with
ammonia, methane, and other noxious chemicals, which build up from the huge amounts of
manure, and the cows are forced to inhale these gases constantly. These fumes can give the
cows chronic respiratory problems, making breathing painful (peta). The result of this is sick
cows, bad meat and dairy products. This also causes different types of sickness and cancers in
humans.
Lastly, the animals are abused by what the farmers feed them. Cows naturally are
supposed to eat grass but factory farms feed them grain feed based on corn to cause them to
fatten up faster. The diet is unnatural and causes digestive pain to the animal. The cows are
rapidly fatten up with grain-based feeds, the conventionally raised cows are often given drugs
and hormones to grow faster, as well as antibiotics to survive the unsanitary living conditions

(whats the difference). Cattle raised for food are also regularly dosed with drugs such as
antibiotics to make them grow faster and keep them alive in these miserable conditions. Instead
of taking sick cattle to see a veterinarian, many feedlot owners simply give the animals even
higher doses of human-grade antibiotics in an attempt to keep them alive long enough to make
it to the slaugh antibiotics have found to cause problems in humans. Factory farm employees
and people in the surrounding communities are frequently exposed to animal excrement and the
dangerous bacteria it can carrybacteria like E. coli, salmonella, and campylobacter (peta).
Although there are a lot of factory farms not, all of them are like that. There are a lot of
organic farms where the farmers feed their livestock and animals natural feed raise them in an
open clean environment and do not abuse them physically. The living conditions must include
access to outdoors, shade, shelter, fresh air, direct sunlight suitable to the species, and access
to pasture for ruminants, livestock that are produced under organic management must have their
total ration that is comprised of agricultural products including pasture, forage, and crops that
are organically produced and handled organically (FAMU).
In conclusion, abuse of farm animals or livestock occurs on farms with these animals
physically, in their living conditions, and though their foods they are fed. When we abuse
animals we abuse ourselves, if the animals arent healthy were not either.
