Chef Patrick OConnell (right) showed me around The Inn

at Little Washingtons Old World-style kitchen (above).

recious few of us preside over a kitchen as grand

as chef Patrick OConnells at The Inn at Little
Washington. This remarkable space revolves
around a 24-burner Vulcan range topped by a
custom brass-and-copper hood. Hand-painted
Portuguese tiles cover the floors and a bay window overlooking an herb garden dapples the room with light. In
the background, Gregorian chants set a hallowed tone.
The proprietor of this award-winning restaurant and hotel in
rural Virginia, OConnell contends that a kitchen should reflect
the rest of ones house. I was insistent when we built the Inns kitchen that it relate to the fantasy we were trying
to impart: that you were visiting friends in an old country house and that the kitchen was part of it, he says.
If OConnell and the Inns London-based designer, Joyce Conwy Evans, managed to accomplish this feat
in a commercial kitchen staffed 24/7, certainly its a philosophy to which we all can aspire. The five kitchens
featured in this special Kitchen issue (page 61) not only improve upon their owners cooking experiences, but
also enhance and reflect the overall aesthetics of their homes.
OConnell prefers kitchens that blend old and new. Ive noticed a swing back to kitchens that look historic
and kind of grandmotherly, with state-of-the-art equipment, says the chef, whose ideal kitchen in fact belonged
to his Wisconsin grandmother. In older houses, he reflects, the kitchen was connected to its function in a
wonderful way. Patrick OConnells personal kitchen is a work in progress in the 1885 Victorian residence he
is painstakingly transforming a stones throw away from his inn. Too eager to await the results, we profile the
chefs former homethe charming Claiborne Houseon page 48. Bon apptit.

Then there was uncertainty. Then waiting
and more waiting. As the
former Washington Design
Center building in Southwest
began its transition into the
future home of the Museum

began to shutter, local designers were left to source their
projects in a setting that was
uninspiring, to say the least.
All that has changed now

This 42 x 54 acrylic painting now hangs in the family room, setting a warm, personable and inviting mood.

For years Gail Hubberman had seen David Cochrans ads in magazines and always
thought the concept of a family portrait would be perfect for her family.
She felt her husband Steves upcoming 50th birthday was the perfect opportunity and she loved the idea of surprising him on his big day.
She knew she wanted the immediate family and both sets of parents depicted in the painting, but had no idea how to lay it out.
She invited Dave to her home to discuss possibilities. She was delighted to find that Dave would get the images needed to create the
painting from her own family snapshots (NO sittings!) and that they would work together to create a personalized background. Dave
assured her that the painting would be finished on time (he hasnt missed a deadline in 30 years) and the price seemed reasonable, so the
commission was confirmed. Dave even helped her determine an appropriate size for the family room wall.
As David scoured family photos, he found one of Gails favorite photos of her two children sitting in a laundry basket from 1997 and
decided to include it. He also depicted many personal family references such as: the family dog, Serten Advisors, in which Steve is Managing
Principal, JRs Ribs in Ocean City, MD (owned by Steves parents) and the Washington Capitals.
Gail decided to surprise Steve at his birthday celebration at Joes Seafood in Washington DC. The restaurant hung the painting in a prime
and visible location. As Steve walked to the table he stopped in his tracks and was rendered speechless, an unusual occurrence for him!
He marveled at the level of detail and how the artist captured the likeness and personality of his family.
Gicle prints of this painting were given to various family members.

opened The Inn at
Little Washington
in a former auto repair shop in 1978, few would have wagered
that the venture would not only succeed
but would garner top accolades from restaurant critics for decades to come.
Though it has grown to include 24 guest
rooms in the original structure (which also
houses the restaurant and public spaces)
and several outbuildings, the Inn still
recalls another time and place. Inspired by
notable European properties, OConnells
fanciful creation centered on the main
streets of rural Washington, Virginia
(population: 150), transports guests into a
world where walls are painted in monkey
motifs, cheese is served atop an anatomically correct cow sculpture and ceilings
are bedecked in kaleidoscopic cutouts of
designer wall coveringsand thats just for
starters. No two guestrooms are alike.
What is lacking today [in hospitality]
is a sense of place, an identity, an authenticity, a personality, says OConnell. We
want guests to feel like theyre in someones home and we want it to look as if it
has been here a long, long time.
To OConnell, nailing the ambiance
and timeworn patina is just as critical as
serving an impeccable foie gras. Your eye
can never be bored, just as your palate can
never be bored, he says. Its all parallel,

to keep guests intrigued and amused and
to sustain that fascination.
OConnell grew up in big Washington, where he studied theatre at Catholic
University. One could argue that he hasnt
strayed far from his first calling. In his
forthcoming book, The Inn at Little
Washington: A Magnificent Obsession
(Rizzoli, New York, April 2015; $50),
OConnell reveals that in his mind the Inn
is a healing cocoon and a folly and stage
set for whatever drama is being played
out in guests lives.
If the Inn is theatre, OConnells leading lady is Joyce Conwy Evans, a Londonbased set designer who has decorated
every room on the propertymost of
them sight unseen. After she receives a
blueprint of a new project, he explains,
Joyce goes into a trance and starts painting a rendering in watercolor. She has a
vision and then steps into it. Its been a
wonderful collaboration for over 35 years.
In addition to guest quarters, Evans also
collaborates with OConnell on his private
residences on the campus. One of these

Alexandria architect Allan Greenberg transformed what was once a town eyesore into
Claiborne House (top, right). Formerly Patrick OConnells home, it now serves as the Inns
presidential suite. Its grand, two-story foyer (top, left) features paneling made by local
craftsmen and faux-painted to complement the English wallpaper. The living room (above)
creates a sense of timeless splendor with faux-marbled columns trimmed in gold paint, an
antique reproduction screen and an English Wilton wool carpet from Stark.

was Claiborne House. After OConnell

purchased the 1899 eyesore, he hired
Alexandria architect Allan Greenberg to
transform it into a stately, two-bedroom
cottage that would look like it had always
been there. The architects plan created a
kitchen, library, media room and veranda
and gave the house presence with a front
porch and two-story foyer.
Named for a frequent guest, food writer
and critic Craig Claiborne, the cottage was
OConnells own home until 2006, when
he moved into an 1885 Victorian hed
purchased nearby. Soon after, Claiborne
House became the Inns presidential suite.
In addition to its namesake, the retreat
has hosted Al and Tipper Gore, Warren
Beatty and Annette Bening, designers
Carleton Varney and Charlotte Moss and
many a celebrity chef.
In the design of his current home,
OConnell and Evans are following their
proven approach. Each space, each piece

London-based designer Joyce Conwy Evans made a dramatic statement in Claiborne Houses
master bedroom (top), with its barrel-vaulted ceiling covered in Scalamandr wallpaper and
its lavish Scalamandr drapes. The room opens to a decadent master bath (above) with walls
papered in Brunschwig & Fils toile, custom mahogany millwork and a Waterworks tub.

needs to have told. Its a little like raising a

kid; it cant necessarily be exactly what you
want it to be. You follow its ordersand
try not to go broke doing it, OConnell
quips. Once they find a clue, whether
its a piece of furniture, a color or wallpaper, everything falls into place. While his
master bathroom is done (heated floors,
marble-slab walls, Waterworks tub), the
residence remains a work in progress.
However, readers will soon be able to
survey the rest of OConnells domain in his
handsome and eloquent new book. People
who have worked here for 10 years have
never seen it all, he says. The book is a
window into the extent of the nuttiness.
Chef, proprietor, co-designer and star
of the show, OConnell has clearly found
his oeuvre. My love, he concludes, is
the art of transformation. Transforming
anything. Like a turnip into something
incredible, or a tear-down into something
magical.
Photographer Gordon Beall is based in
Bethesda, Maryland.

Like all accommodations at the Inn, Claiborne Houses guest room (top) shows lavish attention
to detail, from the custom drapes to the papered ceiling. The cottages namesake, the late
Craig Claiborne, enjoyed al fresco meals on the back veranda (above). Overlooking
a manicured garden, it makes a lovely setting for afternoon tea or a private event.

a crucial connection
Mary Douglas Drysdale revives a Bethesda kitchen with vibrant color and a new floor plan
Long-time clients with a home in Bethesda turned to Mary
Douglas Drysdale to design a whole-house renovation for
them. The kitchen, which is central to the traffic flow of the
house, was outdated, inconvenient and needed an overhaul.
The kitchen is sort of the L joint between the family room/
breakfast area and the living room, explains Drysdale. The
way it was, it just didnt work with how my clients wanted to
use the space.
The designer developed a floor plan that linked these spaces
via the kitchen while creating a beautiful new breakfast area
and modern family room. The clients had requested separate
islands for cooking and casual dining, so Drysdale designed a
furniture-like island for gathering at one end of the kitchen
and a larger one in the center that provides plenty of space to
work and also holds the sink. An existing professional-grade

Wolf range that the homeowners wished to retain was relocated to a wall opposite the sink. Countertops and the backsplash behind the range are Caesarstone, while the remaining
backsplash is wood paneling.
Color was an important decorative element for Drysdale, who
selected a dark teal hue from Sherwin Williams and applied it in
varying shades in a striped pattern on the walls. The cabinets were
painted to match. In a project where there is a desire for design at
a reasonable price, I often develop a striped paint pattern on the
drywall and coordinate it with the paint color of the millwork,
Drysdale explains. Its a custom look without a high cost.

sleek & Simple

Paul Bentham marries practicality and panache in a contemporary Georgetown kitchen

When severe flood damage necessitated a whole-house renovation, the owner of a Georgetown townhouse tapped designer
Paul Bentham of Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath to overhaul
the ruined kitchen. This time around, she wanted a simple,
streamlined space with a modern, European sensibilityas well
as a more practical layout.
Bentham started by shifting the refrigerator and pantry
cupboards to one side of the kitchen and the double ovens
to the other, then centered the cooktop in between. He
maximized the length of the island, which houses the sink,
and topped it in Caesarstone with a waterfall edge to create a
clean, uniform look. Semi-custom cabinets by Canada-based
Zonavita Kitchens offer the sleek, contemporary lines of
European brands.
The peripheral cabinets and those under the island are clad
in durable melamine with a gray-hued, horizontal oak grain; to

either side of the cooktop, high-gloss cabinets in a warm shade

of brown-gray provide contrast and create a reflective quality
for depth, says Bentham. He added a soffit at ceiling height
throughout to create a clean visual line. Caesarstone tops the
remaining counter space, while the backsplash above the cooktop
is gray-painted glass.
For a final touch, Bentham installed eye-catching contemporary light fixtures in a shiny, metallic finish over the island. I
felt that with the grays and browns, the room needed something
with punch that would tie into the overall look but give it an edgy
feel, he says. Sleek, modern stools in chrome and white complete
the space.

Playful Style

Marika Meyers bold design delivers fun and function to a Georgetown kitchen

Clients with a Victorian in Georgetown hired Marika Meyer

to update their outmoded home, including the kitchen,
which was functional but felt dated with its monochromatic
palette and finishes. We wanted a total transformation
without a total renovation, Meyer says.
The designer kept the original layout, opting to paint the
existing beige cabinetry crisp white and install new hardware.
Cream-colored countertops were replaced by Carrara marble
in cool gray tones, while the walls were painted a deep gray to
complement the veins in the marble, which is also used as the
backsplash.
The island remained in the same spot, but Meyer enlarged
it by 14 inches with a false panel in the center; the panel
allows for extra storage beneath and a larger work surface.
To add what she calls an extra level of individuality to the
space, Meyer persuaded the homeowners to paint the pale

white-oak floors a playful gray-and-white striped pattern that

ties in with the wall color. I was lucky, she recalls, because
[the owner] was open-minded and willing to be bold. The
three-tone stripe by decorative paint company Billet Collins
lends the room a vibrant extra dimension.
While the kitchen is traditional in style, Meyer added
a couple of elements to give it modern, youthful energy:
a light fixture above the island from Design Within Reach;
and Series 7 bar stools, an iconic Mid-Century design
by Fritz Hansen. Its actually amazing, the designer
comments. With just a few changes you can get a brand
new kitchen.

Row House redo

Jonas Carnemark imparts style, convenience and flow to a Georgetown kitchen

A 1940s row house in Georgetown was sorely in need of an

update. When a young couple purchased the house, they
tapped Jonas Carnemark of Konst: Kitchen Interior Design
to tackle the problematic layout while giving them a spacious
new kitchen.
To create a more functional floor plan in the same footprint,
Carnemark assigned new roles to the rooms. The cramped
kitchen, sandwiched between the dining and breakfast rooms,
became a butlers pantry. The kitchen now occupies the back
of the house where the dining room used to be and the dining
room is at the front. We puzzled for a while over how to make it
work, Carnemark recalls. When we made the decision to move
the kitchen to the back, everything fell into place.
The homeowners selected matte-lacquered SieMatic cabinetry
in the Beaux Arts style for both the kitchen and butlers pantry,

with quartz countertops and backsplash. On the island, where

stools clad in cowhide provide seating, a wood slab fabricated by a
family friend delineates the eating area.
The couple are food connoisseurs, Carnemark says. They
also love to mix drinks, so we went for it with a cocktail wall on
one side. This bartenders dream includes beverage cabinets with
solid and glass doors, a custom table for mixing and pouring and
a Sub-Zero beverage fridge; the cabinetry is stained dark to set it
apart from the rest of the kitchen.
French doors bordered by sidelites bring in natural light and
pendants over the island finish the space.

Layered Modern
Erin Paige Pitts remodels an Annapolis kitchen in warm, contemporary style
Clients in Annapolis wished to renovate their circa-1980s
open-plan kitchen/family room, where they spend the majority of their time. They hired designer Erin Paige Pitts to create a more functional layout and a fresh, modern sensibility.
What surprised Pitts was the couples wish for a contemporary aesthetic, which contrasted strongly with the
traditional style of the rest of the house. They came to me
with lots of pictures of very modern spaces, she recalls. To
bridge the contrast, she opted for what she calls a layered
modern look with wonderful finishes that convey warmth
and interest.
Dropped soffits and an awkwardly angled peninsula
gave the original kitchen a dated look. Pitts removed the
soffits and replaced the peninsula with a long, spacious island that would be convenient to every part of the kitchen
and provide a spot for casual meals. Silestone counters

and textured backsplash tile from Porcelanosa add to the

modern vibe.
To keep the room bright, Pitts combined gleaming,
white-lacquered upper cabinets with warm, gray-stained
wenge lower cabinets that ground the space and create
visual interest. She installed a wet bar at one end of the
island, using frosted-glass cabinets and a metal mosaic-tile
backsplash that complements the rest of the space.
Metallic light fixtures from Urban Electric hang above
the island and sleek, modern stools offer plenty of seating.
Open shelves in front of the windows hold purple accent
pieces that pick up the colors in the rest of the room.

My philosophy about design

is simple. Your home should
reflect who you are and also
work for the way you live in it
and use it every day. To me,
luxury is living in a space that
your family and friends love to
visit and never want to leave.
It is truly enjoying your home
and the time you spend in it.

ight years ago, a fire almost destroyed an 1891

wood-frame house in Garrett Park, Maryland,
where such Victorian-era architecture is revered.
Town preservationists hoped the burned dwelling
could be saved to maintain the historic character
of the community. The propertys new owners
agreed to consider restoration, but after hiring an engineer, discovered much of the structure was damaged beyond repair.
So these empty nesters replaced the charred wreck with what
they call a modern farmhouse. Says the husband, a retired information technology specialist, We wanted something that fit into
the neighborhood, a design that looks somewhat traditional on
the outside, but is more contemporary inside.
Architect Richard Williams designed a spacious front porch,
pitched roofs and wood siding to recall the architecture of nearby
homes. Avoiding a sense of nostalgia, he rendered the familiar elements with crisp outlines and graphic contrasts between materials.
Fir-trimmed windows of different sizes stand out against the
pale-stained cedar walls. The chimney rising above the roof at the
front of the house turns out to be a light well illuminating the stair
hall. We simplified the architecture to its essential elements to
create a restrained backdrop for our clients lives, says Williams.
The design came from a balancing act between modern and traditional elements throughout the process.

The L-shaped house is widest at the front to allow room for

a modern garden along the sides and rear. Designed by Gregg
Bleam, the spare setting of native plantings exemplifies the landscape architects site-specific Minimalism. We tried to create a
sense of quiet and tranquility, says Bleam.
Like the homes architecture, the landscape is a study in simplicity. Hornbeam trees around the perimeter frame a lawn with a single
Jane magnolia. Closer to the house, a shallow reflecting pool extends
to a planter filled with horsetail. Entering the home from the traditional front porch, the Zen-like designwith its view of water
through a tall window in the hallwaycomes as a surprise.
To emphasize the indoor-outdoor connection further, Williams designed a large corner window in the living/dining space at
the heart of the main level. Stretching below its gridded opening
is a banquette for sipping coffee and contemplating nature. We
imagined that as a place to picnic next to a stream, he says.
While the homeowners wanted rooms open to daylight and
views, they werent enamored with architecture of glass and steel.
I like cozy bungalows and Cape Cods, says the wife. Modern
can seem cold. Williams responded by mixing materials and textures throughout the interiors: dark limestone and oak floors, a
stone-and-brick fireplace, Venetian plaster in a bathroom.
A fir-paneled ceiling marks the dining area, where leather chairs
are paired with a walnut table crafted by Nebraska woodworker
Andy Colley. A nearby barn door slides open to the away room
at the front of the house, a quiet, book-lined space for reading,
working at the computer or listening to music.
The owners insisted the home be eco-friendly and accessible so
they can keep their utility bills in check and comfortably age in
place. I wanted it to reflect universal design, says the wife, so
we included a side entrance to accommodate a wheelchair and a
bedroom suite on the ground floor. Some of the walls are framed
for an elevator, in case we need one in the future. Energy-saving
features such as a geo-thermal heating and cooling system, foaminsulated walls and a reflective aluminum roof earned LEED for
Homes certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The owners also requested enough space to accommodate visits
from their four grown children and grandchildren while keeping the
size of the house manageable for the two of them. They didnt want
to have rooms lying around waiting to be used, says project architect Tim Abrams. There is no formal living or dining room, and no
space is overblown or unnecessary. Three bedrooms, including the
master suite, occupy the second floor (the ground-floor bedroom is
now used by guests) and an office above the garage could be turned
into another bedroom or a caretakers suite.
The house and rear garage are linked by a screened porch abutting the bluestone terrace next to the pool. There, the family can
gather and enjoy the view. Says the husband, Its a good place to
pull up a chair and watch the sunlight reflecting off the water.

hen Samantha Friedman was asked to

update and decorate
the interiors of a
3,500-square-foot Dupont Circle residence, she took her cues from
her debonair bachelor client. I instantly
saw menswear, she explains of her overall design approach. I wanted the interior dcor to be like a decorative version of
menswearto feel like opening up a mans
closet and looking at his clothing.
Though the bones of the circa-1890
house were good, the interior design was
dated, with heavy wallpaper and ornate
chandeliers, lots of dusty pinks and dark
woods. Friedman introduced the patterns,
colors and textures that a professional
man would wear, with pops of brighter
color that are like the pocket squares and
silk ties.
Throughout the three-bedroom home,
furnishings sport houndstooth, herringbone and Oxford-stripe fabrics, in neutrals like navy, gray, tan and brown. Materials include wool, velvet, linen and lots
of leather, and colorful accessories enliven
each space. For example, the neutral home
officewith its rustic sawhorse desk and
chic leather sofahas teal accents, while
bursts of red balance the bedrooms blackand charcoal-hued furniture.
My client had originally wanted to go
with gray, which was the it color when
we started the project, Friedman recalls
of the color palette. But I didnt want the
home to feel too trendy or too classic. I
wanted it to have its own voice.
Architecturally, the biggest change took
place in the master bathroom, which had
been pokey and small; clad in black marble,
it housed an uncomfortable clawfoot tub
and an impractical wood-burning fireplace
that was never used. I knocked out a wall

and gained 200 square feet from the master bedrooms oversized walk-in closet,
making room for a spacious steam shower, something the homeowner had really
wanted, Friedman says. She raised the
fireplace off the floor, replacing it with a
gas version that operates via a convenient
switch. It sits beside a new soaking tub.
For the most part, however, she worked
with the homes original footprint, looking for ways to freshen and revamp. The
kitchen was completely remodeled in its
existing layout, with a banquette designed
by Friedman in the breakfast nook. Fireplace mantels received modern hearths
and surrounds, while light fixtures were
switched out for contemporary statement
pieces. In addition to paint, wallpaper in
textured grasscloth did the transformative job of refreshing the house from head
to toe.
Friedman played with materials, often
combining two or three types of upholstery on one piece. For instance, the dining room chairs are clad in both leather
and linen with nail-head trim, while the
host and hostess chairs also have a velvet
stripe on their backs. The kitchen chairs
and armchairs in the living room are covered in a tailored mix of patterned and
solid fabrics.
Blending fabrics lets you be a bit trendier, fun and playful, without putting yourself in a corner with one crazy pattern,
the designer explains of her approach.

ternplus, if and when you get tired of

one, you can switch it out without having
to reupholster the whole piece.
According to Friedman, though light
and spacious, the living room was the most
difficult space to configure. Long and narrow at 13 by 22 feet, it features a fireplace
at one end and a bay window at the other.
The designer ultimately chose to break
up the space with a two-way upholstered
bench in the center that creates intimate
conversational nooks on either side and
unifies the room. I didnt want to focus
either on the bay window or the fireplace
in the living room, she says. My aim was
that youre drawn to the whole room, not
to one part of it, so guests can be just as
comfortable sitting in the window area as
by the fireplace.
Because the homeowner had previously
lived in a very modern apartment, the furniture he brought with him didnt work in
this new, more traditional setting. Friedman replaced it all with new pieces purchased to fit precisely into specific spaces.
Each conveys the clean-lined, tailored look
she was after while also being comfortable
and inviting for social gatherings.
Among the few previous possessions to
pass muster in the new house were clayand-wire sculptures made by the clients
father. During the final stages of the project, Friedman carefully selected abstract
modern artwork and sparingly installed
window treatmentsincluding simple silk
panels in the living rooms bay window and
red-trimmed blackout blinds and curtains
in the master bedroom.
My client really loves his home, she
observes. It completely works for him
and his lifestyle. In fact, he travels so much
for work that he often tells me he wishes
he were home more.

atthew Small, an executive at the educational

software firm Blackboard, Inc., couldnt have
been more sure of his
goals for the merger of
his Penn Quarter duplex with the one he
bought above it. Modern was the message and New York designer Matthew
Berman of workshop/apd was the medium for delivering a fresh new look to the
reorganized floors where Small, his wife
and their two young sons would live.
The duplexes occupy the top four
floors of a 10-story glass tower on F
Street. The couple had moved into their
first apartment in the building after
starting their family in the Virginia suburbs. Luckily, around the time their urban, 2,250-square-foot dwelling began to
grow tight, their neighbor sold them his
duplex directly above. With double the
living space, the couple hired workshop/
apd to brainstorm the consolidation.
Berman, principal and co-founder of the
New York interior design firm, is known
for his design of a loft for CNNs Anderson Cooper as well as for winning the
Sustainable Design Competition for New
Orleans, sponsored by Global Green and
Brad Pitt to create an affordable, sustainable community after Hurricane Katrina.
What earned Smalls respect, however,
pre-dated Bermans street cred: Weve
been friends since childhood, Small says.
I knew his talent was hard-wired when we
were kids. In an introductory high school
class on architecture, he designed an addition to his familys home that his father
actually built. I never forgot that.

Berman won the condo boards approval with a mock-up of plans for the
four floors. His team worked with a local
structural engineer to penetrate a posttension concrete slab in order to join
the eighth and ninth floors. The Smalls
dream of combining the duplexes included implementing something visually
beautiful as a unifying element. So Berman designed a bold sculptural staircase
to span the floors, placing it against the
glass front of the building where its visible from the street as both a landmark
and a privacy scrim. The white Corian of
the rail panels is a conventional material
made fresh and different with an organic
pattern we cut using computer technology, says Berman. The pattern casts

Finding expressive new uses for standard building materials is one of the firms
trademarks. For the Smalls, Bermans team
selected a medley of natural materials as
building blocks for organizing and simplifying the layouts on the four floors. The

plank-top table extension to the kitchen
island. In the boys quarters on the eighth
floor, a retractable wall with a blackboard
finish provides the option of extra bedroom space for guests in the playroom.
While the finishes maintain continuity throughout, each floor has a distinct
personality that reflects its function and
furnishings. Siting bedrooms on the lower
floors of the glass tower saved the best
views for living and entertaining at the
top. On the ninth floor, the streamlined
kitchen connects seamlessly with the adjacent family living area, thanks in part to a
bookcase that supports a TV on the family room side while providing a backsplash
surface on the kitchen side. We wanted
to extend the living area into the kitchen
for a harmonious look, says Berman.
Eames chairs, a shag rug and a sectional

sofa in the family living area convey the

period modern vibe that prevails throughout the home. Upholstery patterns help
diversify the space says Berman, and go
with everything on all four floors. The
unity of color and pattern delivers a cohesive sense of home.
The top floors spectacular views suggested a cool, clubby sensibility perfect for
entertaining. Workshop/apds interior design team showcased furniture and finishes from the 50s to the 70s while Berman
contributed his fresh take on a credenza

the stair rails. The mix is Mid-Century

or most families planning

to build or renovate, functionality and ease of movement are essential. But
in the case of a McLean
couple designing a home
to accommodate a physically disabled
daughter, these ideals took on a whole new
meaning. Marta, a nutritionist, and Michael, a scientist/entrepreneur, have three
adult daughters including Gina, who relies
on a wheelchair for mobility and a service
dog to assist with daily activities.
When they relocated to the DC area
from Illinois, Gina was off at college and,
later, grad school. After she moved back
in with her family a few years ago to start a
job with the Department of Defense, they
discovered that despite adaptations theyd
made, getting around their house was too
cumbersome for her. So Marta and Michael
decided to tear it down and start anew.
Their goals were far-reaching: to make
every roomincluding closets and bathroomscompletely accessible, and to
incorporate independent but connected
living quarters for Gina, now 31. Throughout the property, doors and passageways
would have to be wide enough to accommodate Ginas wheelchair and English
Labrador, Susie. There could be no grade
changes on the homes three floors or in
its exterior spaces. All lighting, security,
HVAC and A/V systems would be controlled via iPhone or iPad, either handheld or installed in each room.
One residence would provide an environment for Gina to learn the skills required for living totally independent from
us, says Michael, and the other would
provide a home for us to age in place with
room to accommodate our other daughters and their families when they visit.
The couple selected a design team based

Sroka designed the wrought-iron stair rails in the main foyer (below). To the left, the foyer

doors. In the family room (above), the coffered ceiling mirrors the pattern in the floor; Srokas
team created sculptural shelving that holds extra ottomans when theyre not in use.

on the willingness to explore outside-thebox solutions. First, they tapped Phil Leibovitz of Sandy Spring Builders after admiring a house his firm completed nearby;
he introduced them to McLean architect
Glenn Chen Fong, whom they hired to design the home.
In this case, ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] standards were not relevant
as they didnt accommodate a wheelchair
and service dog side-by-side, explains
Fong. Hours of discussions allowed us to
add up all the parameters and take a fresh
look at accessible design. We truly reinvented the wheel.
The existing awkwardly shaped lot
narrow on the street side but projecting
almost 500 feet deepturned out to be
a boon to Fongs design. Since Gina commutes to work via a Metro Access van, siting her quarters near the street made sense,
so he created a one-story cottage for her
with the family home extending behind it.
A long, light-filled hallway bordering
the familys three-car garage links Ginas
cottage to the main home. If Gina wants
to live wholly independently, she can just
close off the corridor, the architect explains. But if theres an emergency, her
parents can be there in a heartbeat.
Guests arriving at the main house enter
on the side into a gracious foyer, also accessible via Ginas inner corridor. The main
level encompasses living, dining and family rooms; a kitchen; a study; and a master
suite. Though a grand staircase leads to the
second floor, Gina can reach her two sisters bedrooms upstairs, as well as the lower
level, via elevator. In the basement, the entire family works out in a gym and indoor
SwimEx resistance pool.
As construction commenced, the clients hired designer Skip Sroka to pull together the interiors while addressing the
challenges of accessibilitysuch as floor
coverings. Marta told me, There will not
be carpet in this house. The wheelchair
will ruin the rug or, worse, the carpet will
roll into the wheels, recalls Sroka. So he
defined spaces with dramatic designs in the
hardwood floors, from geometric patterns
to an inlaid medallion in the couples shared

study. The patterns are strong enough that

they create a welcoming sense, he explains.
Though his clients also wanted to forgo
drapery, Sroka convinced them window
treatments were necessary to warm up the
interiors. It wouldve been too institutional if there wasnt anything on the windows,
he comments. Botanical prints in natural
colors reflect rich interior millwork.
Special care went into creating new furniture arrangements. The custom dining
table, for example, was crafted to be wheelchair-accessible. We have a place in every
room where theres space for another chair
because thats Ginas spot, says Sroka.
Its just part of the design.
Planning for a future when Gina will live
in the home when theyre gone, Michael
and Marta ensured that it would be as
maintenance-free and sustainably designed
as possible. Solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling and spray-foam insulation
make it energy efficient. Sustainability
simply makes sense, Michael says.
Now complete, the new homes sophisticated exteriors and welcoming interiors
belie the fact that its fully accessible.
To me, beauty is the inspiration for living, Sroka reflects. A physical limitation
shouldnt preclude you from that.
Part of accessibility, he continues, is
talking about what the person youre designing for can do, because its not a onesize-fits-all solution.
Gina would have to agree. The house
has greatly improved my lifestyle by being
barrier-free, she concludes. Rather than
the focus being my disability, I can focus
on the abilities I have and what I can accomplish.

t all started with the bowling alley. Its long expanse of

professional-grade lanes fills the lower level of a sprawling, custom stone house in Woodbridge, Virginiaa
dream fulfilled for the owners, who built their home
with this beloved sport in mind.
The couple shares the hospitable, 13,000-square-foot house
with their dog, Sarge, and a regular stream of visiting family and
friends. We wanted the house to hold everyone, says one of the
owners. We knew, with the bowling alley, it would have to be
big, but we wanted it to feel lived in, not like a museum.
After purchasing a 10-acre site that curves down to the
Occoquan River, they assembled a team that started with builder
Mike Garcia, who sold them the land. Architect Sandhya Gorur,
tapped to design the home, was given a wish list that went beyond
the bowling alley to include an indoor swimming pool, screened
and covered porches, five bedrooms and seven baths. The challenge was to keep the house from being too long and narrow because of the bowling alley, Gorur recalls. I didnt want long corridors and too many rooms.
The couple hired interior designer Lorna Gross-Bryant before
they broke ground. Involving Lorna from the start was essential,
observes one homeowner. We didnt want to wait to the end to
hire a designer when there were so many decisions to be made.
By dint of a 70-foot retaining wall, the house was positioned to
straddle a deep ravine bordered by woods that reveal river views
in the winter. Wood and stone surfaces throughout convey an
organic sensibility and the floor plan is open, but with divisions
that allow you to define the spaces, says Gross-Bryant. For example, Gorur delineated the living and dining areas to either side
of the entry with pillars and arches, while Gross-Bryant used sisal
rugs under decorative area rugs to differentiate spaces, grouping
furniture atop them to encourage gathering and conversation.
After getting to know the owners, Gross-Bryant decided on
a look that would be warm and inviting in spite of the homes
size. I understood their personalities right away, she observes.
Theyre relaxednot pretentious. A bowling alley means you
want to have fun, right?
A refined mix of fabrics and finishes gives each room a sophisticated presence, while comfortable seating throughout allows visitors to relax. Hand-scraped hardwood floors add a casual, rustic
touch, but are stained dark for a hint of elegance.
As per the owners request, the curving staircase is hidden from
the foyer, positioned instead in the great room, which lies straight
ahead from the entry. Beyond the stairs, the spacious kitchen
flows into a breakfast area and family room; Gorur designed the
kitchen so guests can be seated nearbybut out of the way

The indoor pool (opposite, top) and the bowling alley (opposite,

the lower level, a media room (bottom) with comfortable chairs

when cooking was in progress. The indoor pool is visible from the
family room through a wall of windows. We wanted to highlight
the pool area and have it relate to the house, explains one owner.
Chairs beside the windows swivel so guests can observe the action
in the pool from a comfortable perch.
Also adjacent to the family room is a three-season screened
porch that can be closed off from the elements by glass panes that
draw down over the screens. The porch leads to an expansive patio, beyond which lies another porchthis one covered but not
screened. It features archways that frame views of the backyard.
Downstairs, the bowling alley beckons. The lanes are clad in
the same laminated flooring found in professional alleys, and the
elaborate operating system is concealed in its very own room.
Vintage game boards and posters adorn the walls.
The bowling alley is part of an open-plan space that includes
a media center, a full bar decorated with original Guinness ads
from the 1920s and an alcove that holds a game table and custom
banquette. A workout space occupies an adjacent room.
I refer to this house as a staycation home, Gross-Bryant says.
The owners like to spend time at home, and this house offers
everything they need. Other than an occasional trip to the grocery
store, they never have to leave!

FUNCTION
Shlomi Abukassis coaxes exotic woods
into heirloom furniture designs
BY ROSEMARY KNOWER

orn in a bomb
shelter in a small
Israeli town near the
Jordan River, Shlomi
Abukassis grew up noticing
everythingfrom beauty to
destruction. He was drawing,
dancing and acting by the age
of two. And by his teens, he
was dancing in lead roles at a
prestigious drama school in
Tel Aviv, where he paid for
tuition by designing, painting
and building sets.
Little did he know, that talent would become a vocation
years later in his adopted town

of Baltimore. Now a full-time

woodworker, Abukassis specializes in custom furniture,
cabinetry and built-ins for
both commercial and residential clients.
My artistic sensibility is
rooted in the North African
style: beautiful and intricate
woods, he says. Building sets
in school is where I learned
I had an affinity for working
in wood. Today, his Baltimore studio, Kaya Furniture
Design, is crammed with his
creations, from secretaires,
sideboards and cabinets to

exotic stairs. Clients can marvel at the luster of Bolivian

rosewood, curly mahogany,
cherry and leopard woodall
of which create a sense of
timeless tranquility.
Michelangelo could see the
soul of a sculpture in raw marble; Abukassis does the same
with wood. He approaches
each piece by studying the
graining of the raw material
and envisioning the finished
work after he has meticulously
carved, joined, hand-sanded
and varnished it. The result is
a unique work of art. Wood is

alive, and the careful juxtaposition of colors, graining and

form will produce a unique,
graceful piece that becomes
part of the family, to be used
for generations, he says.
After marrying an American actress and moving to
the States in 1995, Abukassis apprenticed with former

for woodworking did; Burns
taught him how to coax the
best from each species and
specimen. Dennis was my
mentor, like a father to me,
says Abukassis. After two
years, he sold me his studio.
Burns also introduced Abukassis to the late Baltimore
restaurateur Peter Yagjian.
Peter gave me my first commissions after a look at my
sketches: an armoire, a desk,
a table and a new bar for his
pub, the artist recalls. After
that, the business kept on
growing. Today, online orders
come in from Texas, California, Michiganall over.
Abukassis invites clients
to review his portfolio and
describe their vision to him.
Each piece is designed in col-

laboration, he explains.
Recently, he and his wife of
15 years donated a Maddy
table to an auction to benefit
The Light House, an Annapolis homeless shelter. Bidding
was fierce: A state senator
took home the prize while the
losing party ordered a chair of

anything is possible.

he Sherman Building
a 160-year-old National
Historic Landmark known as
the Old Soldiers Homewas
among several important DC
buildings damaged by the 2011
earthquake. Entire sections
of masonry collapsed and the
130-foot clock tower was visibly

for retired veterans, vacant for
the first time in its history.
In 2012, Quinn Evans Architects was selected to lead a
painstaking restoration of the
building, located in Brookland.
Since plans for the structure

The top portion of the clock tower
had to be disassembled, labeled
and catalogued, then reassembled
around a new, hidden steel support. Some 3,000 stones on the
