Essays
Choose one of the following questions and write an essay which concisely, clearly, and
thoroughly address each of the topics. A reasonable amount of detail with at least approximate
dates is expected. Make sure that you provide an interpretation (a thesis with supporting
evidence) and not merely a jumble of facts and dates. The essay is worth seventy-five (75)
points.
1. Despite challenges from the various Protestant movements, how does the Roman
Catholic Church survive to remain the dominant form of Christianity to this day? In your
response, provide an evaluation of the Catholic reformation (Counter-Reformation), the
policies of the Catholic monarchies in England, France, and Spain, and the work of the
Catholic Church beyond Europe.
2. Having begun as a movement for religious transformation, the Reformation by the later
sixteenth century had devolved into a series of religious conflicts. How and why does this
happen? In your response provide analysis of the causes and outcomes of the french Wars
of Religion, the revolt of the Netherlands against Spain, and the Anglo-Spanish War of
the late 1500s.
