Summary

MARITIME AFFAIRS OF HERCEGNOVI DURING

REIGN OF VR. 1 AND KOSACA

on occasion of the 600th Anniversary of Hercegnovi Maksdm ZLOKOVIC

The Bosnian king Tv.rtko 1 laid the foundatiiO:Ils of today's Hercegnovi

in the middle of the year 1382 primarily to use as port for export of
greater part of Bosnian trade. Fo.r that purpose he established market
place fo1 he sale of salt at Hercegnovi as well as salt works i the n
SUJtoDina field, whereflom he was supplded with salt for the new founded
town and i.ts strroundings. The aim \vas to beoome independent of Dubrovn1k
and Kotor. The town was still under construction when under the first tower
ships full of salt started to put in. Long lLnes of oaravans kept carrying off
that salt into the inteior of the country, bring.ing back copper, lead, iron ore,
smoked meat, animal skins, etc. The Repulic of Dubrovnik noted protest
a;nd demanded of Tvrtko 1 to close both the market-place and the wharf citig
the oliginal ag.reements made between the Republic of Dubrovnik and the
Serblan and Bosnian rulers. They immediately organized their vessels to hinder arival of the ships with salt at the port of Hercegnovi. The war galley
! Dubrovnik patroled in font of the entrance to the of Boka Kotorska
p1eventing the sblps with sa1t to ent.er the t of Hercegnovi. ln order to
get rid of the p1essure of Durovnik, vtko 1, <1mmediately in 1382, demanded of the Veneans the purchase of two brigantines which he intended to
arm a.nd use against the enemy's operations.
The Venetians pleaded not to have any vessels for sale upon \Vhat
Tvrtko 1 i order to reach his aim he soonest possile, nominated Venetian pa.trician Basei for commander of his future fleet. The Venetian government approyed of this nominaon and the purchase of the demanded brigantines in addit.ion to one gailey armed wLth 1 gun. ln 1834 it approved the
purchase of tvvo more armed vessels. Most part of the year this fleet \vas stationed a.t Hercegnovi.
During the whole reign of Tvtko 1 the oitizens of Hercegnovi and Dracevdca, together with those of Kotor, made on their ships numerous commercial voya.ges exporting various goods fom the port of Hercegnovi.
The Duke Sandalj Hranic, one of the heis of the king Tvrtko 1, continued all those sea and trade activities of his predecessors. Stefan Vukcic
Kosaca, as the l1ei.r of Sandalj, made efforts to enlarge the port and the to,vn
Hercegnovi, organized produotion and trade with salt and in 1449 founded
cloth factory as the secod in Europe, the first being in Dubrovnik.
During his rei<gn Hecegnovi bccame an export port, indu.strial, trade
and maritime centre of Hercegovina.
Herceg Stefan possessed considerae fleet mostly inherited from the
Duke Sandalj Hranic and p!'tly purchased in 1441 d the t\vo followin.g
years Dubrovnik, Venice, Naples and Kotor.
Herceg Stefan used his fleet various encounters with DubroYnik. Therefore, the rector of Kotor complained to the senior wathorit.ies in Venice as
not to l to send mail directly sea but through DubroYni.k on accou.nt
of Herceg Stefan's shi;p.
Unfortunately, our a:rchives do not dispose of complete details concerning Herceg Stefan's fleet.
