Summer 2016

Sunday June 19th 8:00 AM Sharp

Upward Bound is DC Bound!
We will be leaving for our DC Excursion at 8:00am sharp on Sunday June
19 from the Vail parking lot at LSC. This is same parking lot that we use when
we have our big meetings, and is located right in front of the LSC theater.
Simply drive up the hill past the ball fields and park in the lot outside the theater. Keep your eyes open for the big Premier Coach bus! Although we will have snacks on the bus, we
want all of our students to have eaten a good breakfast before they get on the bus! Please make
sure you are in the parking lot ready to go by 7:45am at the latest. This will give your student
enough time to stow their bag, find a seat, and say their goodbyes. We have had to leave students
behind in the past, and we do not want that to be you!
th

The Goals of Upward Bound

Always remember that the goals of our Upward Bound program are quite simple: to see our
students graduate from high school, go to a college immediately after high school, and then graduate from college. Everything that we do is geared toward achieving these goals.
Our summer academic program seeks to prepare our students for their classes in the next high
school year. The SAT Prep courses make our students more comfortable with this important test
and raises their scores. The on-campus experience helps prepare them for college life: roommates,
dining halls, and the balance of schoolwork and a social life. Our adventure-based education exposes
our students to healthy risks. If our students can overcome physical challenges we think the mental
challenges will somehow seem much less imposing. We provide travel and cultural opportunities to
give students exposure to experiences not always available in the Kingdom or the North Country,
always with the goal of developing well rounded students who are ready for college.
Our work/community service experience is a bonus that few other Upward Bound programs
offer. Our students work 15 hours a week in a wide range of jobs in the local community. We feel
very strongly that all students should work, and our community service program also ensures that
our students develop good work habits while giving back to the community. The students will have
weekly evaluationsand some are surprised by the comments that they receive! And of course our
students, like everyone else, look forward to receiving a UB paycheck for their labors!

Please do not underestimate your role in all of this. It is important for you to be
there for your son/daughter offering support, encouragement, and also a kick in the pants
when needed. Working together we can best prepare our college-bound students for
success in the years after high school. We are proud to be on this journey with all of you!

Our goal is to have our students interact with the other extraordinary students on this trip, be present in the great opportunity
that has been offered to them, and start to build relationships with the staff and the other students in the Upward Bound program! We will give students time to check in at the end of the day but as you can see they will be busy!

Travel Tips for our DC Excursion

DC Travel Tips
We will be gone 5 days and
encourage our students to
travel as light as possible.
There will be no events that
will require dressing up, think
comfortable and remember that we will be outside walking a great deal and summer weather
in Washington can be very warm, but dress in
layers! Comfortable sneakers that tie tight
are essential for all of the walking well be doing! This is not a complete list, but it should
give you a few things to think about. Let us
know if you have any questions.

Items to Bring:
Essential: Personal hygiene items, EPIPens, Asthma inhalers, Any other prescriptions,
Sneakers, Socks, Underwear, Towel
Recommended: Comfortable Clothes,
Wind or Rain Coat, Shorts & Pants, Sunscreen,
Sweater or Sweatshirt, Water Bottle,
What Not to bring: Laptop, Game Boy,
Only Flip Flops, Other Valuables (special jewelry, for example) that you dont want to be lost
in the Big City.

Dealing with Homesickness

When students leave home to attend Upward Bound, homesickness may occur, especially if it is their first summer with us. Talk to
your son or daughter and give them some pointers on how to overcome
it. Feel free to call our office if you have any questions or concerns, and know that you can always call us or your students TC during the summer.
Here are a few tips for you to help ease homesickness for your student:
Make the departure day as stress free as possible; be prepared and pack ahead of time.
Dont Be Latethis is an unnecessary stressor.
Suggest that your child bring photos for his or her college dorm room.
Cards, postcards, letters, and care packages are always welcome:
Students Name, c/o Upward Bound at Lyndon State College,
1001 College Road, Lyndonville, VT 05851
Students may send post cards or letters home, too, so give them envelopes and stamps.
Remember to tell them youre proud of them and the commitment that they are making to
their education!
And remind them that they will see you in 5 short and fun-filled weeks (and most weekends!)

Dorm Life 101:

What We Can Live With and Without!

Moving your child into the dormitory can be a back breaking experience for parents. Each
year we are amazed at what kids bring to Upward Bound! You would think that perhaps they will
never return home. Here is a quick list for you and your child to follow when packing. Remember,
they will only be away from home for five days at a time and you will not want to carry too
much extra stuff up those flights of stairs!
Bedding - extra long twin sheets, pillows, blanket.
Personal Items - soap, shampoo, towels, tooth paste, toothbrush, hygiene products, etc.
Clothes - we are informal (comfort is key!), but remember some job sites want you to
dress business casual or in scrubs. And, sneakers are a must for Elective classes!
Your iPods and registered cell phone are welcome but No TV or computer
Pens, Pencils, Notebooks- (students in Geometry will need a compass and protractor)
Fans are recommended - We are sure that we missed something, but remember, they
do have stores in town, and we have quarter operated washers and dryers in the dorms.

Questions about stuff to bring or not to bring? Please call us.

Health Concerns?
If your son or daughter has any health concerns that we should be aware of, please let us
know. It is important for us to know exactly what medication our students are taking. Our
Head Resident can dispense the medications or ensure that the medication is being taken at
the right time - but we have to know. If you have any other concerns, please let us know.

Are We In The News?

Often we send out press releases highlighting our student's accomplishments or
activities, but we do not always know when
or if it was printed. In fact, Abbie and I
send out several press releases each week
and sometimes never see them. If you see
an article in your local paper, please take
the time to cut it out and send it to us - we
have uses for all the good press!!!

Check into Wheelock Dormitory

Sunday, June 26th
3:00-4:30pm
Please note the time and place for moving into
the Wheelock Dormitory. After your son/daughter
is settled into their room we will have a brief
meeting and then a picnic barbecue. Please return
your RSVP card from the May 29th meeting
stating the number in your family who will be in
attendance (we have to inform the food service
people at LSC of how many to expect). And please,
no boyfriends or girlfriends - this is for family
only. Look for signs coming up the college hill for
directions to Wheelock Dormitory (take your first
left after turning at Lyndon Institute and then
your second right to Wheelock Dorm). We cant
wait to see you all and celebrate the start of the
summer!

Parents of Seniors:
It is our hope and understanding that all
of our seniors are now set for college in the
fall. We are very proud of our senior class!!! If
at any time during the summer you have any
questions at all about your financial aid award,
college billing procedures or about your child in
general as they prepare to go off to college,
do not hesitate to call. We plan
on working with all of our students right through college graduation!
Were here for them, and
for you, as they head off on this
next big adventure. And we will
be for the next several years.

Parents of Juniors:
Next year at this time your child will already
have decided where they will be going to college,
a scary thought isn't it? We will be working with
our seniors-to-be throughout the summer, exploring colleges, admissions procedures, financial
aid forms, scholarships and time lines for the
coming year. Hopefully your child will have a serious head start on their classmates come September.
Please remind your child that we expect
them to have at least 3 colleges identified when
they move into the dorms, to be ready for Senior
Seminar. Many colleges do accept the Common
Applicationbut students need to know if the
schools on their list do and if they require any
supplements.

UB Jamboree!
We are very excited to once again be heading to Castleton University
for the Upward Bound Jamboree on July 14th. This get together is an annual
tradition bringing almost 600 students from the 7 local UB programs, together for a summer celebration. Students will not attend worksites on the 14 th
or 15th but we will have elective classes that morning. We will spend the night
at Castleton and then tour the Burlington Colleges all day on Friday. Colleges
we will see will include: the University of Vermont, Norwich University, Albany College of Pharmacy,
Champlain College and St Michael's College. A few of our students will also have a tour of the med
school facilities at UVM and get a chance to practice with their medical devises. As you can see,
Upward Bound Summer 2016 will be a very busy one!

Help your Child Develop the Skills to Succeed

When your child steps onto a college campus you will not be there to remind them to do
their homework, brush their teeth, clean their room, eat three healthy meals a day, sign up for
the right classes and get extra help from their professors. Students have to be able to advocate for themselves, in order to be successful in college and beyond. This is a very important
skill! You can help them develop these skills by having them call us with questions and concerns.
Obviously, there are situations when it might be best for you to call us, but we feel it is very
important for students to begin advocating for themselves now in high school, so that by the
time they step onto a college campus all alone, they will be well equipped to handle any situation
that confronts them. So when your child cant make it to a meeting, they should call us. When
your child has questions about scholarships, paperwork or what classes they should be taking,
they should call us. Its another part of the college readiness puzzle!

Summer Staff
We have finished hiring our staff for the summer, and at this point we
thought you would like to know who will be teaching your kids and living with them
in the dorm. As always we seek to hire our former LSC Upward Bound students
whenever we can and most of our summer staff (8/10) this year are UB alumni.
They know what it was like to be in our students shoes, and are now on their way
to achieving their college dreams! We honestly think that our summer staff is
what makes our program so strong and this year is no exception. Once again
there is a very nice mix of seasoned and new staff members that we are sure our students will enjoy.

Our Residential Staff:

Deride Martin-Baker (Craftsbury) is a returning alum who is a graduate of Plymouth State University. She is an outstanding
student, cant wait to get back this summer, and is very excited about the potential weekend trip She will be the Head Resident
in Wheelock Dorm again this summer.
Krysta Gingue (Lyndon Institute) will be a junior at the University of New Hampshire and is one of the best tour guides that we

her best one in 5 years!

Summer Experiences 2016

4th of July Schedule

Each year the 4th of July affects our summer schedule, both with
classes and with our worksites. This Summer, our students will return to
campus on Monday July 4th between 6:007:00pm. We think that it is
always important to have our students with us the entire summer, so
please plan any activities around the 4th of July holiday! The students
will have nice extra long weekend

Burklyn Arts Fair Saturday, July 2nd

We will be looking for volunteers to help out at the annual Burklyn Arts
Fair on the morning of Saturday, July 2nd. Volunteers do a wide variety of
things at the Craft Fair: help set up, serve food, prepare food, and help clean
up. This is an opportunity for you to help raise money for arts programs in
our local schools, and also help yourself build volunteer experience which colleges look at very favorably. Talk to Rick or Abbie once we are on campus to
sign up for this great day of service.

Bread and Puppet 2016

We will once again join the World Famous Bread and Puppet folks for workshops,
story telling, and stilt walking on July 20th this
year. The good folks at Bread and Puppet come
from all over the world and perform all over
the globe entertaining and educating viewers on
issues such as social justice, humanism, and the
environment. It is an outstanding cultural opportunity for our students, and always a fun event.
These people are true artists and live an artists lifestyle. On Sunday July 24 th Bread and Puppet will also host a Resurrection Circus in the afternoon and we may bring our tired students
to the festivities...

Upward Bound Parents' Night

Sunday, July 10th, 6:00PM
Please note and mark your calendar for our annual Parent's Night on
Sunday, July 10th. Please join us at 6:00pm to hear about our program, see a
screening of our summer video, meet your son/daughter's instructors, and then
join us for some delicious local VT ice cream at the end of the evening. Mark
your calendars and we hope to see all of you here!

2016 Upward Bound High School Graduates

And the colleges they will be attending:
After many trials, triumphs, tribulations, changed minds, and countless applications, here is
what we hope is the final list of where our graduates will be attending college in the fall of 2016. We
will once again have almost 100% of our UB seniors that stayed with us going on to college immediately
after high school. This years seniors are going to a wide variety of colleges and are seeking many different types of degrees in the future. This is what Upward Bound at Lyndon State College is all about!
Another way to look at this breakdown is
14 different Colleges, 7 Private Colleges, 6 State College and Universities
6 students at Vermont State Colleges, 3 at UVM, 4 at out of state Public Universities,
5 at New England Private Colleges, and 2 at Other Private Colleges
100% of the LSC Upward Bound seniors have worked hard to make good choices!

2016 Upward Bound College Graduates

The following is a list of our 2016 College graduates from the Lyndon State College Upward Bound
program. As you can see they went to a wide variety of colleges and it the smallest list of graduates but
represents a 74% graduation rate over the last 6 years! Several of these students will continue on in their
education or enter the world of work. Our goal continues to be seeing our students graduate from college;
not just enter college after high school. These kids were in the exact same position four or five years ago
(or more) that your kids are in now. It took a lot of hard work for these students to get where they wanted
to be. And they are all AWESOME!

LSC Upward Bound Cell Phone Policy

Not many people these days are without cell phones. We understand that your
son or daughter probably has one and more than likely uses it on a daily basis. As you
have heard, again this summer we going to allow our students to bring their cell
phones on campus. Last summer the students did well so we want to continue allowing students
these important parts of their lives. Students will have to register their phones with their TC
and will have it available to them throughout the program. We will not collect cellphones, but we
do expect that students will not be using them during academic, social, or community activities.
What this means to our students is that we expect them to be fully involved with our activities
at all times. If a student wants to call home they will be free to do so at appropriate times or in
any emergency. What we do not expect are long conservations with people outside of Upward
Bound taking away from the social and residential aspects of the program, or use of phones after
bed time when students should be sleepingor when their roommate may be trying to sleep!
Here at Upward Bound we encourage our students to get to know one another, join in with
activities, and be fully present- not distracted by text messages and phone calls from friends at
home. After all, if students arent mingling with each other or paying attention during classes,
they arent getting the full Upward Bound experience! If we are not happy with the way our
students respect the policy it will be changed. But I know our exceptional group of young scholars, and I have faith that our students will rise to the expectation!
