The name of the country means "Low


Countries", due to its low and flat
geography and with only 50% of the land
is above the sea level, where the rest is
below sea level.

Sports:
In

the period of winter their favorite sport is speed skating. Also soccer is another
tremendously popular sport witnessed in Netherland

Traditional Dress:
They

do not have a traditional costume as you see different regions wear different
costumes. But, the Volendam costume consisting of the black skirt, stripped apron, shawl
and a lace hat along with wooden shoes are what most people believe to be the
traditional dress

Cuisine
Traditionally,

Dutch supper consisted of boiled potatoes, vegetables and a meat selection.


Indonesian influenced meals were also popular. Raw herring served with raw onion is
extremely popular in the Netherlands. Herring and onion are sold everywhere by street
vendors.

Family:
They

see the family as the foundation of the social structure. Mostly the families tend to be
small with two children and relatively only few women work. This allows the mother to be
available for their children throughout the day.

Demeanor
For

them appearance play a major role as they pay very close attention to even the smallest
of things. They place high value in cleanliness and neatness. They prefer not to draw
attention to themselves and dislike the display of wealth.

Democratic
The

Dutch are democratic and highly understanding of individual differences. Their children
are raised without gender biases. There is practically no abject poverty in the country.

Privacy:
They

are more concerned about their privacy and reserved when dealing with outsiders. Also
they consider self-control as a virtue and keep their personal life and business life separate.

Although there are many different ethnic groups that are represented in
the Netherlands, the most prominent group is the Dutch, who are native to
this area.

The official language of the Netherlands is Dutch, which is spoken by


almost more than 80% of the population. Dutch is a West Germanic
language that originated in the Early Middle Ages and was finally
standardized in the 16th century. Apart from Dutch, the language Frisian
is also spoken, which is primarily in the province of Friesland, a coastal
region along the south-eastern border of the North Sea.

The Netherlands was always a primarily Christian country until the late 20th
century, when the religious devotion began to decline. Since then, the majority
of the population does not practice a religion.
