Scope
This method of statement covers the use of self-adhesive membrane waterproofing on
areas shown on approved drawings.

2.0

Purpose
This method statement defines the responsibilities and describes the activities and
procedures to be implemented for the application of self-adhesive waterproofing
membrane for the Construction, Completion and Maintenance of Roads, Bridges,
Storm Water Drainage, Sewers and Other Services for Roads Connecting Sabah al
Ahmad and Khiran New Towns -RA239 Project to comply with the contract drawings
and specification.

3.0

Responsibilities
3.1

The Site Engineer shall be responsible for the implementation of the work in
accordance with this method statement and his responsibilities shall be, but not
limited, to the following:
3.1.1 Preparation of work schedule
3.1.2 Supervising the work to ensure the work is performed properly.
3.1.3 Prepare the necessary Request for Inspection (RFI's) and arrange
inspection with the consultant Engineer.
3.1.4 Ensure that work is done in accordance with this method statement and
with approved drawings and specification.

3.2

Specialized Waterproofing sub-contractor shall be responsible for the


implementation of the work in accordance with this method statement and
their responsibilities shall be, but not limited, to the following:

Ordering and preparation of only approved materials and required


tools.
Designating skilled workers for the work.
Full supervision to ensure the work is performed properly.
Proper application of membrane waterproofing as per procedure
written on Material Data Sheet/Manufacturers recommendation and as
per approved drawings.

3.3

The Quality Control Engineer shall continuously monitor all activities related
to the work if implemented in accordance with this method statement and
approved drawings.

3.4

The Material Engineer shall submit to the Engineer for approval all the
materials to be incorporated in the waterproofing works.

Safety
The Site Engineer and specialized subcontractor, in coordination with the Safety
Officer, shall be ensuring compliance with all safety requirements during the
implementation of this work which shall include, but not limited to the following:

Provision and proper use of safety paraphernalia.


Maintaining cleanliness at work areas.
Proper disposal of excess and waste construction materials.
Providing visible warning signs and/or barricades at work areas when
necessary.

Procedures
6.1

Examine the concrete substrates and adjoining construction, and the conditions
under which the membrane waterproofing is to be installed. Do not proceed
with the work until unsatisfactory conditions detrimental to the proper and
timely completion of the work have been corrected.

6.2

Coordinate with all related subcontractors prior to start of the work.

6.3

Surfaces shall be inspected for readiness to receive the bituminous primer.


Surfaces to which the waterproofing materials shall be applied shall be surface
dry, smooth and free from dirt, grease and oil or other deleterious materials.

6.4

Apply bituminous primer following manufacturers recommendation and


allow to dry naturally before applying the self-adhering membrane.

6.5

After the primer has dried to the extent specified by the manufacturer, apply
the membrane sheet to the concrete without stretching with 120 mm overlaps
at edges and ends, and the sheet shall be rolled down firmly and completely.

6.6

Inside and outside corners shall be doubled by using an initial strip of 300 mm
wide membrane, centered along the axis of the corner. This strip shall be

covered by the regular application of self-adhering membrane. A troweled


bead of mastic shall be applied over all exposed edges of the membrane.

The membrane on blinding slabs shall extend to the outer edge of the slab and
shall be protected. Sidewall membrane shall extend down and out to the edge
of the previously applied blinding slab membrane.

6.8

Areas around drains, piping and protrusions shall be double covered with an
additional layer of self-adhering membrane for a minimum of 300 mm in each
direction beyond the limits of the feature. The membrane edges shall be coated
and the gap between the membrane and protrusions shall be filled with mastic.

6.9

At expansion joints, an additional ply of membrane 500 mm wide, centered on


the joint and extending full width of the roadway and up to the membrane
terminating point of the walls shall be applied.

6.10

Before any work is allowed to proceed above a waterproof membrane, or


within five days of its application whichever is the sooner, the membrane shall
be protected by an approved protection board as shown on the approved
drawings.

Inspection and Testing


Required inspections shall be carried-out as per approved Inspection and Test Plan
(ITP) and enough time in the daily work program shall be allocated to permit the
performance and checking with the consultant before proceeding with any subsequent
work.
