NOTES

TRADITIONAL

The opening hymn is a paraphrase of a text used in

worship from the 4th century. It is known by its Latin
name, Te Deum Laudamus (We Praise You O God). In
verse one, the sovereign rule of God over all in heaven
and on earth is proclaimed. Verse two focuses on the
adoration from the angelic beings, referring to the
thrice holy phrases from Isaiahs vision and from the
book of Revelation. Verse three sings of those who
have died, who upheld the faith of the Church through
the ages. The final verse moves us to the present as
we add our voices to those singing in heaven in praise
of our Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
(Hymn No.3, God, We Praise You!, is a contemporary
setting of this same Te Deum text.) Sometimes we are
tempted to think of a song in worship as simply that,
similar to singing along with the radio in the car. A
hymn engages the heart, the mind, and the voice in
conscious participation with the community of the
Church through the ages, and those in heaven in
offering active worship to God. Dont ever be lulled
into thinking we are just singing a song in church.
Sing your faith. Sing your heart. Sing to God! Its not
about listening to others sing. The hymn is not for
your benefit. Add your voice to the praises headed
heavenward.
