 Aims of education are determined according to


the aims and philosophy of life
 As aims of live change, aims of education also
change .
 We can get general estimation of the aims of
education at some time by knowing the philosophy
of life at that time
Ancient Period
• Sparta-was under constant attack by the enemies. Hence the
aims of education were to inculcate virtues, of
patriotism,courage,fearlessnes,bodily powers, strict
discipline, and a spirit of self sacrifice at the call of the state
• Romans-Roman education catered to the fullest development
of children n all spheres of human activity.
• Athens-The aims of life was to have beauty of physique, of
character and a sense of appreciation for the objects of
beauty. Hence the aims of education was the qualities which
enable the children to lead their lives comfortably.
Thus a change in the philosophy of life changes the aims of
education

• Islamic period
• Propagation of Islam.
• Spread of education among muslims.
• Extension of Islamic kingdoms.
• Development of morality.
• Achievement of material wellbeing.

• Acc. To Locke,edn should develop the inherent qualiities,aptitude&
capacities of the children.
• Psychological tendency began to influence education very powerfully.Edn
became child centered.
• Acc.to Pestalozzi the aim of education is to develop the personality of the
child to the fullest extent.
• Herbart advocated the aim of education as formation of character.
• As industrial education had its impact on edn,the one of aim of edn became
development of vocational efficiency.
• The aim of edn depend on the country’s
ideology.Eg:India,America,England-development of individuality of the
child.
• Russia &China-indoctrination of enforced obedience & rigid discipline.
Philosophy& curriculum

• By means of a curriculum the desired behavioral changes


are sought to be achieved to attain the goals of life as
determined by a particular philosophy.

• The philosophy of a country at a particular time determines


the curriculum in which subjects,activities,experiences are
included to attain the demands of the society at that time.
Philosophy & methods of
teaching

Philosophy is a way of thinking & working .These two factors determine the
nature ,style and actual operation of methods of teaching.
NATURALISM: It emphasizes on the child’s
taste,interstaptitude,capacities rather than the curriculum. Dalton plan,
learning by doing, Heuristic ,Montessori& other self learning &developing
methods are used.

IDEALISM: Question answer method,discussion,lecture & any other


method which ensure the total development of child’s personality.

PRAGMATISM: advocate full and free development of the child’s


individuality hence project method (more practical experimental)
Philosophy and discipline
• The social, economic and philosophical thinking of a country
decides its discipline.
• Adams in his book, "Modern development in educational
practice. "discussed the following forms of discipline:
Philosophy & textbooks

• To achieve aims of life and education, textbooks are of great value and
importance.
• T.Bs are influenced by the prevailing philosophy of the day.
