Abstract:
The voltage regulation of the single phase transformer was measured. The lamp board with five
bulbs was used as a load. The load current IL was slowly increased and the corresponding
increase in the secondary voltage Vs was measured. Then % voltage regulation was calculated.
Practical was repeated five times and corresponding voltage regulation was calculated. Then
graph between % V.R and IL was plotted.

1. Introduction

Background
A voltage regulator is an electrical regulator designed to automatically maintain a constant
voltage level.
Objectives
i. To find voltage regulation of a single phase transformer
ii. To interpret graphically the voltage regulation by making the graph between % voltage
regulation (%R) and load current (IL)
Theory
The voltage regulation of a transformer is defined as the variation of the secondary voltage
between no load and full load expressed as a percentage of the no voltage, the primary voltage
being assumed constant.
Equipment and Materials
i. Ammeter 0-10 A
ii. Voltmeter 0-150 V
iii. Lamp board
iv. Wires
Method
i. Make the connections as shown in the circuit diagram.
ii. Get the connections checked by the supervisor in the lab.
iii. Switch on the supply to the primary side of the transformer, keeping the secondary side
unloaded.
iv. With the secondary circuit open i.e. no load, note down the secondary induced voltage as
‘Es’ from voltmeter and record in the observation table.
v. Switch on one bulb and take reading of the same voltmeter and call it as Vs.
vi. Continue switching on the bulbs one by one and read the voltmeter readings as Vs and
record in the observation table. Also note down the ammeter reading.
vii. Calculate the percentage voltage regulation from the reading taken as below,

%V.R= (Es-Vs)/ Es x 100

viii. Plot a graph between % age voltage regulation ‘%R’ and load current ‘IL’.

Results

Observations and calculations

Es= secondary voltage at no-load = _117_volts

Load Current Il Sec. Volts at load

S. No. % V. R =(Es-Vs)/ Es x 100
(amps) Vs (volts)
1 1 114.5 2.13
2 1.9 114 2.56
3 2.9 113.5 2.99
4 3.88 113 3.42
5 4.92 112.5 3.84

Discussion
The graph between % age voltage regulation ‘% V.R’ and load current ‘IL’ was a straight line in
the beginning and then it become parallel to x-axis.

Conclusions
The mean % age voltage regulation of the single phase transformer is 2.988.
