Higher Physics Assignment 006

1) A physics student investigates momentum by pushing two small carts towards each other as
shown:

6.0 kg 2.0 kg

3 ms-1 4 ms-1

The carts collide and move off as shown below

6.0 kg 2.0 kg

1 ms-1 v ms-1

a. Use conservation of momentum to calculate the velocity of the 2 kg cart after the
collision.
b. Show that the collision is inelastic.
c. Show that the change of momentum of the 6 kg cart is equal and opposite to the change
of momentum of the 2 kg cart.

2) A golfer chips a ball towards a green. The golf ball leaves the face of the golf club at 15 ms-1 at an
angle of 70O.

a. Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of the golf ball.

b. Show that the golf ball is in the air for a total time of 2.87 seconds
c. Calculate the horizontal distance travelled by the ball.
3) In a sports laboratory a golf ball of mass 0.046kg is dropped onto a force sensor which displays a
graph of how the force on the ball varies with time. The golf ball bounces off the sensor.

a. Show by calculation that the magnitude of the impulse on the ball is 0.4 Ns

b. What is the magnitude and direction of the change of momentum of the ball?

c. The golf ball is travelling at 8 ms-1 just before it hits the sensor.
Calculate the velocity of the ball just as it leaves the force sensor.

d. The golf ball is now dropped onto the force sensor which has now been fitted with a
hard concrete top.
Sketch the force time graph which would be obtained on the graph above.
