Note: Careful pipetti g a d titrati g tech iques are esse tial if good data are to be obtai ed.
The temperature should be co trolled as precisely as possible.
1. Obtai about 50 mL methyl acetate i a large test tube a d £00 mL 1.0 M HCl i a
Erle meyer flask. ÷llow these solutio s to equilibrate i a 25oC bath. ÷lso equilibrate a
flask co tai i g about 200 mL of deio ized water.
4. Titrate the diluted aliquot as soo as possible with sta dard NaOH usi g phe olphthalei
as the i dicator.
5. Repeat steps £ a d 4 at 10 mi ute i tervals for o e hour a d for 20 mi ute i tervals for
a other hour, if possible. Make sure that the pipet used to withdraw each 5 mL aliquot is
clea a d dry.
Repeat the above procedure usi g 100 mL 1.0 M HCl a d 10 mL methyl acetate as the
reactio mixture. This reactio will proceed more rapidly, so aliquots should be withdraw
at shorter i tervals. juplicate ru s should be performed if possible. ÷ efficie t stude t
pair should be able to follow two or more properly spaced reactio s at the same time.
Repeat the procedure at £5oC usi g the reactio co ditio s give i step 2. Remember that
the rate will be about double that at 25oC, so aliquots will have to be withdraw at shorter
i tervals. jetermi e the molar co ce tratio of the HCl at £5oC.
