POSITION PAPER on TERRORISM IN YEMEN
OPHELIA LAI and STEFAN NIGAM, GSIS

As a nation that is deeply concerned with the security of its people, the spread of terrorism is naturally
cause for great alarm in the United Kingdom. Due to the fact that terrorism in Yemen is one of the
biggest threats to both our national security and that of the International Community, we actively seek
to eradicate the danger of terrorism, and welcome states to join us in the fight against this heinous
threat. We would like to express our appreciation of the cooperation shown by our fellow member
states of the Friends of Yemen organization. However, this is undeniably a multi-faceted issue and we
recognize that we must adopt a more comprehensive strategy in order to fully combat the problem.
Our security force-focussed approach has regrettably done little to reduce the risk of terrorism in
Yemen. We urge all delegates today to take this into consideration when formulating a resolution, so
we can deal with terrorism more effectively in the future.
