Assignment # 1

Question 1:

If FC=4128; VC=271; S=319 and capacity =400 units, then find the number of
units sold if there is net loss of Rs. 528.

Solution:-

CM = 319-271
= 48/units
NET INCOME = CM-FC
LOSS = 528
CM = 48a (consider ‘a’ units sold)
-528 = 48a-4128
48a = 4128-528
48a = 3600
75 units have been sold.

Question 2:

For the following values of x and y, calculate slope and intercept.

Y X
5 3
9 4
12 7
15 8
19 10
26 13
34 18
38 21

Solution:-

Calculating from desire values:-

Y X XY X^2
5 3 15 9
9 4 36 16
12 7 84 49
15 8 120 64
19 10 190 100
26 13 338 169
34 18 612 324
38 21 798 441

From Above,
n=8
Σxy = 2198
Σy = 158
Σx = 84
Σ x^2 = 1172
Slope b = 8*2198-(84)(158)/8*(1172)-(84*84)
= 17584-13272/9376-7056
= 4312/2320

SLOPE b = 1.8586

Intercept = mean Y-b mean X

Mean X = ∑x/n
Mean Y = ∑y/n
Mean X = 84/8
= 10.5
Mean Y = 158/8
= 19.75
a = mean Y-b mean X
= 19.75-(1.8586)10.5
= 19.75-19.51
a = 0.24
Intercept = 0.24

Question: 3

The data of following table gives the weekly maintenance cost (Rupees) to the age (in
months) of 5 machines of similar type in a manufacturing company.
Age (X) 5 15 30 50 60
Cost (Y) 190 250 310 350 395

Find linear regression equation, y = ax + b, where a is the slope and b is the y-

intercept.

Solution:-

Based on given data, let us calculate the desired inputs as follows:

X Y XY X^2
5 190 950 25
15 250 3750 225
30 310 9300 900
50 350 17500 2500
60 395 23700 3600

a = nΣxy – (Σx) (Σy)/ nΣx^2 - (Σx) ^2

a = 5*55200 – 160*1495/5*7250 – (160*160)
a = 276000 – 239200/36250 – 25600

a= 3.455 (Slope)
__
Equation for intercept b = Y - aX
_
Y = ΣY / n = 1495/ 5 = 299
_
X = ΣX / n = 160 / 5 = 32
b = 299 – (3.455*32)
b = 188.44 (intercept)
Therefore, equation for regression line y = ax+b is

y = 3.455x + 188.44 or can be re-arranged as
