ARC LENGTH

Distance between the tip of electrode and base metal or parent metal

ARC LENGTH -

SHORT ARC LENGTH

GAP IS LESS THEN 3 MM OR

ELECTRODE DIA

MEDIUM ARC LENGTH

GAP IS 3 MM OR EQUAL TO
ELECTRODE DIA
LONG ARC LENGTH

GAP IS MORE THEN 3 MM OR

ELECTRODE DIA

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF DIFFERENT ARC LENGTHS

SHORT ARC LENGTH

ADVANTAGES
1. Can make good penetration
2. Can use to weld large thickness base meta
3. Suitable to weld in vertical up position
4. More weld metal can be deposited

DISADVANTAGES
1. Not suitable for thin section

MEDIUM ARC LENGTH

ADVANTAGES

1. Most suitable for down hand position

2. Can form good ripples
3. Can weld any thickness
LONG ARC LENGTH

ADVANTAGES
1. Suitable for un even thickness material
2. Can weld thick section with large dia electrode
3. Suitable to weld in vertical downward position
4. Suitable to weld thin section with low current

DIS ADVANTAGES
1. Creates more spatters
2. Difficult to control arc blow
