“The Sanskrit word “mula” means ‘root or foundation’ and “hadra” means support

and this chakra is the foundational rock and grounding support of our physical and
spiritual being. The Muladhara is the root or base chakra located at the seat or base of
the spine. Muladhara is the seat of Kundalini, Kundalin means “that which is coiled
or spiral in nature” and refers to that which is coiled or spiral in nature- when I is
added it becomes Kundalini , a feminine noun meaning “snake” at the base of the
spine, the basis from which the possibility of higher realisation, consciousness and
spiritual awareness and development arises. Other wise known as the “coiled
serpent” that sleeps at the base of the spine, [1] “Kundalini then is the mechanism at
the base of the spine that controls the production and quantity of prana, or the life
energy. When the awakening occurs, it is as though a chemical factory is opened in
the body; the more powerful reproductive prana begins to circulate throughout the
nervous system and brain, regulating the activity of the organs and causing them to
function in a more efficient, healthy way”.

The Muladhara chakras colour is is bright red and is located specifically within the
Sushumna channel beyond the base of the spine at the pelvic floor. It is not
associated with any particular gland, but works in tandem with other chakras to
regulate the energy of the endocrine system. It is the power house of the psychic
energy of the libedo. It is not until one takes steps towards spiritual development and
awareness that this chakra awakens and its functions become conscious. This is the
chakra of the physical world and it is associated with the element of Earth, the densest
level of manifestation and also with the sense of smell. It represents physical
limitation and is symbolically represented as a four-petaled lotus flower, representing
the four directions and gateways of space.

“In Muladhara Kundalini sleeps. It is latent activity, which shows outside. Through it
man is bound to the world of appearance and believes that his ego is identical with his
self. Kundalini is concealed cit (consciousness), and when it awakes it turns back to
its master. It is ‘world-consciousness,’ in contrast to civ-atma = individual
consciousness”
